Ok someone please help
I love my sunfire but have had nothing but problems with the transmission, does anyone know of a company that makes an after market that would match up to the 2.2. ecotec, prefebly somehting in a 6 speed if possible
thank
Chris

people should be required to fill out their reg's before being allowed to post

sorry i will go back and fill out the reg in a little bit... i have a maunal 5 speed... which is why i was looking for a 5 or 6 speed... and i have lost 5th gear twice... and its starting to go out again... and i know that when i do get to start really building on this car that this transmission will not be able to handle it... not to mention i would REALLY like to change to a six speed.. if nothing else for the gas mileage with as much as i end up driving
Thanks

If you are loosing 5 gear it is either because of bad driving, or bad work fixing the problem. In regards to needing a better tranny when you start building the car. Well the J-body tranny is very good from the factory. People have went 11's on stock tranny's. The biggest thing that breaks the tranny's is bad drivers. I'm not trying to be rude, but truthful.

Do you rest your hand on the shifter while driving....that wears out nylon fork tips and could be your cause of repeated failures.
My father is GM matster tech and replaced the tranny under warrenty.... the problem is that the synco mesh in the gears went out and ended up eatting the teeth off the gears... he says it is a problem that would have happened to anyone and that is was just a problem with the tranny as far as being a bad drvier.. i understand you are not trying to be rude, fact of the matter is though.. i just use 5th gear in casual driving seeing my fuel cut hits while i am still in 4th gear... i am pretty sure its not that.
I wasn't and am not trying to be rude, just trying to help and sticking straight to the point. I think you the first person I've heard about having repeated syncro problems in these trannies, I hope you have better luck in the future.
hey i wanted a six speed with taller first and second gears, i also wanted to beef up the internals, is there any way to do that other than cryo-treating them???
btw i had problems with the syncro's on 2nd and wen they put it back together they got dirt or something on the shaft in the planetary, well you can imagine what kind of hell that caused until the gears exploded and the replaced the trans.

i am sorry if i came off wrong .. at first i thought it was my driving but i had my dad look at it and do all the warrenty work , so i know where the problem came in... and in all honesty i would rather go witha 6 speed transmission for future goals not to mention the better gas milage on regular driving.. if it seems like i dont... i do appreciate any and all input that i have gotten... from everyone.. thank you very much
i dont wanna thread jack but
the red is where the gears wore a 1/4 inch deep channel into the shaft and yes it was 1/4 of an inch
the green are the gears that exploded and went through the transmission housing
btw this happened at lester speed way on my second run while shifting into 2nd, my first run was a 15.098 with a 2.98 r/t, it would have happened eventually, the added stress just speed up the process.

I guess I'm confused because I stated this has not been a issue for J's. Syncro's wearing out truly come from bad driving. My 2001 Z24 has 83k on it with about 200-250 track passes and I could not begin to say how manytimes I have went through the gears under WOT on the street. Only problem I had was breaking the shift fork for 1 and 2 gears. It is known that the shift fork on our cars (getrag) is a poor design. There is people running 12, 11's and mid 11's on factory tranny's. They can handle alot. Seeing as how this is 5 gear, and as you have stated we do not really race in 5 gear (unless you were doing a top speed run), it would seem one you have a issue with aligment within your tranny and the internal parts. Also maybe driving. Again I do not mean this to be rude but there is no other way of giving ideas without just saying it. So many people in general and on this site think oh I'm a great manual driver, but they are not. People think oh I'm goig to do this mod and this mod abnd run 14's or 12's, well to run those times it is more than slapping some mods on. You have to drive the car (and not drive like you do on the street). Driving at the track is much different!!! I really think that is why you do not see more J's runing 14's N/A, and why GM supercharged cars are not as quick as you would think they are.
Now in regards to the 6 speed. That I know of the only possible option would be for Ecotecs, but I'm not sure if the tranny will bolt up. I do not know, and also not interested. There is truly no need for a 6 speed tranny. If and when you get to the point that you are running out of gear at the track you can read and research on what to do. I only know of one person who has ran into that problem. He has since worked around that.

my only thoughts........ 5th and reverse share the same shift fork........ maybe he's boogering up 5th because he messed the shift fork up shifting into reverse (this fork also has the plastic/nylon sleeve on the tip, like the other 2 forks) My last trans was missing the sleeves from the 3/4 fork, and 3rd was MIA, while 4th still worked. My 1/2 fork had a broken tip as well, it just wasnt busted all the way off yet. Doesnt take much to break the tips off. I might need to take a good tip off, and make some bronze ones
and the exploding diff issue....... doing burn outs will cause excessive wear on the diff pin, and wheel hop will cause the spider gears to fail. My first diff had 52k miles on it, 50+ 1/4 mile passes, and alot of street abuse. One spider gear had a chipped tooth, and the diff pin had some good grooves worn into it, but it still held together with enough HP/Trq to run into the 12's.

Let me know about this. I actually could get you a good one if need to. I would like to have a set of stronger ones in case I ever need to do it again.

well like i said mine was b/c the mechanic at emerling chevrolet in boston NY got some @!#$ on the shaft or on the inside of the gear when they put it back together. i will admit that the syncros failing on second gear was my fault, goin into second its a little stiff and i would occasionally miss when i was shifting really quick. but i want the 6 speed not for a 250mph top end, rather for a fist gear that doesnt run out @ 25mph and a 2nd that doesnt run out @ 50. my friends car goes to 45 in first @ 6500 rpm.
on a side note, how many rpm's can the getrag handle??? b/c when im done building my motor, i wanna be able to push 9,500. and that can be done, gm's ecotec pushed 10.5k no problem.
also does the quaffe lsd replace the planteary or what???
and is there any way, other than cyro-treating (hardening) to beef up the internals???

i can do 35 in first and 60 in second
Umm......you do know that the more gears you got the faster they run out right? - this is only true if you dont what a high top speed, which you said you didn't.
if you have a 6 speed set up to about 150mph top in 5th@6000 or so like our 5 speed is then your 6 speed's first gear will run out sooner. So your logic is backwards, you want a 4spd not a 6spd.
What you want is to lower your final drive ratio to make your first gear run loger.
If you intend on running 9500rpm then dont change the gearing at all, your 1st will run you upto 37mph @ 9500rpm
So everyone is aware the getrag on the Ecotec and 2.4 is a 3.94 final gear ratio. That is a good drag racing gear. Why does everyone what everyone else has????? Realy? You want gearing like a honda buy one. I love the gearing in our cars.

so do i, i just wish 1st and second were taller, even if that meant extending all the other gears. i mean im in first for like .6 seconds and 2nd for like 2.2 sec. they are just sooo short that they are almost pointless. but i hav to agree the getrag is geared pretty damn good. considering it wasnt designed for what we do to them. lol
btw can i get some answers to my other questions???

Well again thank you for everything it has all helped very much i guess in the long run i am gonna have to take the car out to my dads shop and do a rebuild on it, see what i can do, i will say i do drive the car hard, but i also know how to drive a manual, i do it rather well, and as one of you said, you can really push it into 5th gear until i make more upgrades there is really no way nor need to race it in 5th gear
as far as the 6 speed goes i this car is both my playtoy and my daily driver and seeing that i live about 30 minutes from work, friends, car club and everything else, i put a lot of mile on my car in a day (anywhere between 75-100 usually) so part of the point behind looking into the 6 speed tranny was to help with gas mileage
but again everything has been helpful and i hope i can get it figured out, maybe i will have to look into my driving style some and change it up, and i know i do have a tendency to rest my hand on the shifter which some one said can hurt everything i will have to make habit to remove my hand off it more often

i realize you are right not every one can drive well, and it take a lot of practice to do well, especially on the track, i have only had about 10 runs on the 1/4 and am pushing about 15.7 @ 80 mph which is nothing really to brag about but i am getting better and hopefully with a little work, and a lot of practice i will reach my goal of getting into the 11 second rage
Thank much Chris
guess i have to start my own thread to get some answers then.
