Grand Am 5 Speeds Same as Cavalier 2.4 Speeds?
Saturday, January 20, 2007 5:40 PM
I swapped a 5 speed out of a 97 Grand Am into my GFs car and was just wondering if there was a difference in the output seals of the tranny? At first the car leaked tranny fluid from the CVs and I replaced the seal, it has stopped leaking but still there is a little that comes out of the CV while driving.

Not sure, need help, trannies suck ass.

My ex had a 96 grand Am 2.4. The CV's in it were for sure bigger than J's. They were thicker shafts, but not 100% oin the input shaft. Also from research it appears they had different gearing then J's.

wow....I never really thought of that. I have a 98 grand am isuzu in my car, and I have replaced the seals before, and there is still a leak coming from the seals. I was going to do it again, but never thought that the shafts may be different.

Listening intently.

I've never came across any info that the Grand Am's had a different manual trans at all..... they should have the same trans as found in the Cavy, mated to the 2.4.....

Matter of fact, Chris has a Grand Am Getrag trans in his '02, with no problems..... and they do use larger axles (the inner is the same diameter as our inner)

I read on here years ago the gearing was different, but that was it. I woudl agree that it is, because of driving it and when I had my 97. Gear felt longer. It was said the gearing was different because the grand am is a heavier car. Again I read that on here not saying it is true. Also something I realized is the @!#$zu tranny's (at least the ones I had and have seen) those seals leak regardless. I can name 3 cars that had new seals and they leaked still.

The isuzu uses the same seals as the getrag

Here is the Getag ratios for the Grand Am (M86):
1st: 3.58
2nd : 2.02
3rd: 1.35
4th: 0.98
5th: 0.69
FDR: 3.94

Here is the Cavy Getrag Ratios (M86):
1st - 3.58
2nd - 2.02
3rd - 1.35
4th - 0.98
5th - 0.69
FDR - 3.94

Grand Am Isuzu ratios (MJ1):
1st 3.73
2nd 2.18
3rd 1.33
4th 0.92
5th 0.74
FDR 3.94

Cavy 2.4 Isuzu ratios (MJ1):
1st 3.73
2nd 2.18
3rd 1.33
4th 0.92
5th 0.74
FDR 3.94

I called the dealership, and asked for RPO codes for each car. I googled each car, and car/RPO code combo, and found no differences.

So is the input different going into the tranny? Or is the output so to speak different (size which goes through the wheel bearing? I still dont understand while it leaks, I replaced the seals and doesnt leak when it is parked but maybe when it is driving?

Which axle seals did you go with? I know Jake (GreenZ) went threw a few GM seals, that all leaked...... but then put in some AZ seals, and the leaks stoped....... that was on his '96 Isuzu. The trans shop that put his clutch in said they thought the diff bearings might be going bad, causing it to wabble slightly, and the axle is taking out the seal....... or maybe the axle has a groove worn into it.

The pre '99 Grand Am axles where the same size as the 3rd Gen J-s (much like everything else on that car), the '99+ are a bit wider, and thicker....... just the inner CV Joint uses the same size as the J-body.

Timken is the brand. I won't buy any other brand of seal or wheel bearing.

I replaced the seals, it doesnt show any leaks but I assume it is coming up while driving. I will put it up on the lift and run it maybe. Even though the dipstick shows low when I popped out the CV a ton of oil came out so at least it has decent lubrication. I gotta fix that damn thing, am I damaging anything if it is leaking, or keeping it refilled doing okay?

only if the fluid is getting on the clutch....... otherwise its just making a mess (as long as you keep the fluid level up)
