Hello,
I am new here so go easy on me. I have a 2000 Chevy cavalier. 4 speed automatic so I gather that it is a 4T40E transmission. The car has about 95000 miles on it. I average about 25 to 28 MPG average driving. Otherwise it is unremarkable.
When I am driving I feel the car do what I can best describe as a shudder. It feels like the transmission kicks out of gear and back in. The engine does not race, nor does it stall. This only seems to happen when I am in 3 or D. I read a little about the torque converter apply solenoid and thought it could be that, but I read that makes it stall. I liked the idea of a problem with the torque converter clutch because with my limited knowledge it seems that if the torque converter goes from locked to unlocked and back to locked I might feel a little shutter and loose some power but the engine would not race. I just don't know what times this torque converter is supposed to be locked. Is it only locked when the transmission is running in 4th gear?
I had a transmission flush done a while ago and it didn't seem to help. But my wife was the one that drove it to the shop so I was never really certain of what she had done, she didn't remember. I have always been told that if a transmission is not in the best shape and you do a tranny flush it will quickly spell the end of that transmission. Could grime really be holding a transmission together? Is another tranny flush a good idea?
What do you guys think? Is it something simple? Time for an overhaul? TCC Apply solenoid?
Thanks,
it may just need more fluid. has it been leaking at all? mine was doing crap like this when the connection for the cooler inside the radiator was loose. it was leaking fluid, and losing pressure. hopefully it's an easy fix. just have your mechanic check the fluid level by pulling the bolt at the side of the tranny.

It hasn't been leaking at all, I will check the fluid level. Its ashame it's not more simple to check the level though. I added a quart and it didn't seem to make a difference but then it could still be low.
What are the repercussions of too much fluid? I have been told it can blow seals, but then I know on my thunder bird it would just vent the extra fluid out if there was too much.
