PHANTOM GRIP

just wondering if anybody on the org runs a phantom grip. please help me with the installation. i recently received my phantom grip. i have 97 cavalier z isuziu tranny. i got a call today from the tranny shop saying that the phantom grip wont fit in the diff. they told me they have to shave .115 thousanths off the side gears in the diff and .040 thousanths off the top and bottom gears in the diff. the tranny shop said thats a lot to shave off? and another thing when putting the phantom grip in you have to put it at a angle to get it in which is going to throw it off. its suppose to be within .005 thousanths of gears to phantom grip. any help would be appreciated thanks.

hmmm, all i know is when i got mine back from the tranny shop they told me that had to clearance the spider gears-never told me how much. but they didnt seem to have any trouble at all.

mine worked REALLY awesome, when we got it back we threw it up on the bench and put the axels in it... turned one, and the other side turned exactly the same way-so we new it was now posi.

i really like mine man, i couldnt be happier. just be careful when launching the car now, because it likes to torque steer into the ditch hahaha

I have a Team Green LSD (which is similar to the one you have). You should not be shaving anything off. They might need to take the speed ring off to slide the lsd in.

The LSD should remove all the torque steer man. Torque steer comes from one wheel having more power than the other more than anything. If your getting pulled into ditches then something ain't right. Mine flies staraight as an arrow off the line, no matter how I launch.

I'm with John though....if you have to shave stuff down to make the PG insert fit you need to send it back and get the TG version. That's just bad quality control and manufacturing to require people to shave down the spider gears.

I had to get my gears machined to fit my PG, but not that much, though. I haven't had any problems with it in two years. I could definitely use the Team Green spring in mine though. It greatly improved the slippage, but if I give it too much gas, it slips again.

I did have to have the PG grooved to fit the lock ring on my drivers side axle and the transmission assembled with the axle in place. This is on the 3 speed TH125C/3T40 only, the design of the differential won't allow the lock ring to be installed, once the insert is released from the clips.

hmm, thats odd then... idk, seriously tho, when i launched it the damn thing pulled one way or the other (usually to the right) i just figured it was torque steer. it seemed fine though, it didnt alarm me one bit, i cant see it being a problem. i only got to take it to the track once after i had it installed and it was a lot harder to get the launch right, i couldnt seem to do any better than i had before with the open diff. but then again, i only got to run it 3 times before a shift cable broke that night.

and i know for a fact that it was working, because before at the track when i would launch, the passenger side tire would be the only one spinning... it would melt the damn thing down it was spinning so bad. then i had on lookers tell me if the driver's side was doing anything, and they said both were spinning atter the LSD install.

Torque steer also has to do with different driveshaft lengths. If one shaft is longer than the other, it will pull toward the side with the longer shaft, even with an LSD.

I assume when phantom grip designed the original plates they wanted something universal so that it could be used in more then one application. So they made it if you shave the gears down it will fit... The t/g lsd is the same way.

I use to get really bad torque steer last year or at least I thought I did and I didn't even have a phantom grip. After a while I found that one of my A-arm bolts was loose. I got it tight and now it's perfect. Check that out.

he needs a kick in the balls.....

The *NEW* T/G Isuzu design should need NO machining to the smaller side gears. The upper and lower still need machining, but thats just because the Isuzu gears have a lip on them. If you dont remove that lip, the plates only contact that small lip, and you will get nothing from it.

The older T/G LSD design needed some machining of the side gears, but not nearly as much as the PG unit.

If they tech you in by just jacking up one side, you should pass with flying colors...... if they jack up the front end, both tires will spin the same direction....
