Yeah it is, it heats up the fluid and wears out the parts prematurely. Its also pretty rough on the motor.

Imagine driving a manual in first gear all time time. Then add in the fact that, in an automatic transmission, the torque converter does not lock up in gears 1 and 2. It'd be the equivalent, in rough terms, of slipping the clutch halfway every time you're on the gas. If you want noise, get an exhaust.

hey we all have to start somewhere. i bet you didnt know everything you know now when you first started...

But no, a tip will not really change the sound much at all... a different muffler would be what youre looking for.
