1996 3T40 or other problem?
Thursday, February 07, 2008 1:14 PM
Hi group
I am having trouble with a 1996 3t40 transmission. problem started one day where heading out it seemed like it was missing at about 2.5 -3k sputteriing and going then cleared up ran good. code light came on momentarily the went off. thought it was water in gass.Next time I was getting on throughway seemed to stick in 2nd. ran up to 60 or 65 backed down droped in to 2 manulaly then into drive it shifted. but then stalled when i slowed down. got home eventually, thought torque convert wasn't locking. read code this time said trans componet slipping. have been reading forum tried disconecting t convert wires no difference. Is it possible the that the shift body switches in valve body could be receiving bad signals? acording to the tag it is a 3t40 what i am wandering is that where the shift controle cable enters the transmission there are two conectors of wires one looks like it has 5 wires with one being a larger yellow collor the other looks to be a 4 wire conection. do these go to any other controle modules on engine why I ask the car has been setting for a while when i started it today. It takes an increase in rpm for it to engage the trans also when in neutral it seems to hit the rev lmit at about a quarter of the throtle. does any of this make sense to any one? What Iam trying to say is could it be something other than internal in trans? ps millage is only 89000.
Thanks for any help.

It's a '96 with 89K and it's been sitting for a while, I'd say you have water in the trans fluid (from condensation) and or some of the fluid has gummed up. Try chaging the fluid and filter, it should be fine after that. As for the sputtering, you've probably have stale gas and condensation in the gas also. You oil probably has the same and could be damaging the bearing surfaces.

Anytime a car has been sitting for a while, condensation will for in all fluids contaminating them. They also break down over time, losing there effectiveness.

Mad Jack Thanks for the reply
The car was being driven daily when all the problems started surfacing. Not to say there wasn't a possibility of water in gas. Ran a can of sea foam through the tank when the first incident of 2-3k rpm resistance started. Ever use that product? Best moisture remover form gas I've found.
I haven't dropped the pan, but checking by dipstick fluid is not extremely dirty or burnt smell. Have read your posts on other questions . Can you tell me what controls the first and second gear switches in the valve body. also are they connected to the rev limit. through any common electrical module? Any way thanks again thanks for any help.

Ok update to this morning post. Dropped the pan changed the filter. new fluid. Not a lot of sludge or any metal shavings ,I guess it would be normal for millage. . Engine running smooth no misses. only trouble is you have to increase engine speed for transmission to engage probably around 1000 or 1200 rpm, after engaging shifts smoothly not slipping will spin the tires ,how ever reverse 15 to 20mph before it feels solid.just wondering torque converter or valve body?
