Help with transmission
Monday, April 21, 2008 7:39 PM
I have a 1994 Cavalier with the 2.2 motor. I race it on a 1/4 mile asphalt track. My problem is I dont know what I can do to my automatic to possibly have an advantage or possibly come equal to the manuals. I was wondering what I could do to the transmission that would give me a noticable difference. Not wanting to pour money into it but I was wanting to know my options. Thanks in advance for all answers.

3 speed or 4 speed auto? not much you can do to make it better than or the same as a 5 speed. I'm not sure what's out there for the 3spd but if its a 4spd you could look into a b&m shift plus.

Its possible. Automatics have good possiblitys if your serious and dont want to go to cheap. Look into performance torque converter. Its not 100% effecient no matter what you do, but im sure that you can pick up a better one. If you understand how one works you would understand why it loses power through it. Just in case you were curious im sure you can find a write-up somewhere on the net.

Otherwise there is other possibilites. If you have a 3 speed (3T40) you could get your final drive ratio changed to 3.03 or something of that sort. The stock ratio is somewhere close to 2.83. I dont know the exact numbers though. But obviously changing your final drive ratio will help give you an edge. Higher number = lower gear. You will definatly pick up a bit in the 1\4 mile.

TransGo sells a shift kit for the 3T40, but i believe its listed under as a 125c. If you have a 4 speed (4T40E) then I have no advice since I have never worked with one.

Oh, as an add in... If you have the 4 speed look into getting HpTuners. You can control most of the trans that way.

Yeah, your main choices are the shift improver and torque converters. Search something about a build 3t40.
