I believe the automatic used on all the 2.4's was the 4-speed, so it should bolt in. There may be some sensor issues you have to resolve because of the dissimilar years, though.

the grand am is a 4t60e and is hydraulically controlled. The cav is a 4t40e and is electronically controlled.

Incorrect...

4T60E

The E means electronic. For example, the 3T40 (notice no E) is the 3 speed hydraulic transmission. The number after T is the torque rating, the number before the T is the number of speeds (forward gears).

The transmission will bolt up, and I think the mounting is the same, just a different torque rating. He'll have to use the GA axles though...

Shifted you forgot to tell us what the T stands for and since I am THAT bored

T= transaxle
L = longitual EX. 4L60E ( auto trans that came in F-bodys)

I think this is right not 100% sure and its not really useful in any since but hey now you know and knowing is half the battle

the replacement tranny is from a cavy.. my car is a ga. so i would be using the grand am axles. do i need to use the cavy axles on my ga?

I think you want to use the GA axles. I'm not sure, but think there is a difference at the spindle in the axles. I could be wrong.

use the axles from whatever car your using... ie, grand am, use the GA axles... cavalier, use the cavalier axles.

According to Wikipedia the grand am never came with a 4T60E...

1994-1998: 4T40-E 4-speed automatic with overdrive (available with Quad 4 beginning in 1995)
1999-2005: 4-speed automatic with overdrive (4t40e for SE Models, 4t45e for GT models)

I currently have a 99 grand am engine (2.4L) and tranny sitting in my garage, waiting to be dropped into my 98 cavalier Z24 beater car (also a 2.4L but with spun bearing) I just got thinking about the trannys... and came on here to see if they were the same, or close or at least interchangeable.

I know the Z24's had a 4speed auto... and i thought the GA did too (and now i have confirmed that).... But not certain the exact model of tranny in the Z24.

I know the mounts are different between the 2... but i should just be able to use the Z24 mounts and bolt them up to the GA engine and tranny right?

and if they are both "E" transmissions they should drop in and plug up right? I assume there would be no linkage so to speak, it would just be electrical harnesses right? Do/did either car have a tranny cooler or anything i will need to worry about?

Anything i should do to the engine/tranny now while it is out of the car before i swap them? like any maintainence or service that is lots easier out of the car? (the "new" parts have close to 100k miles on them but supposedly ran great with no noises leaks or problems)

Wikipedia is wrong stating that 94-98 Ga's had the 4t40e. I am 100% positive that the 94-98's used the 4t60e. GM switched to the 4t40e in 1999 for the auto Ga's. As far as the z24s, they also use the 4t40e so you are correct in that you should be able to use the cav mounts and bolt it in. The knock sensor on the 99 ga block is a 2 wire I believe? which may give you some issues there. I know the 2000 was def. a 2 wire knock sensor but thought they switched it in 99? Unsure about the plugs? My 4t60e had fluid lines that ran to a cooler in the radiator?(its been a while so I can't picture it exactly) that I eventually replaced with a separate Hayden trans cooler.

If I were you, I would replace that water pump while you have it out of the car. If you do that, take a look at the timing chain guides and tensioner to see if they need replacing as well.
