Hi guys, I just picked up a 96 Sunfire GT 5 speed. The guy I bought it from was a complete tool, and has managed to make a complete wreck of the car.
Right before I bought the vehile form him, he swapped the blown 2.4 for a JY 2.4. The fan was hard wired to a toggle, and the starter solinoid was gone and had a push button start instead, sway bar end links were gone, low beams dont work, but the driving lights and high beams do, turn signals and brake light ddnt work, ect. I have fixed the starter issue, the turn signals the brake lights, and the fan will be done next.
However, Im have tons of tranny problems. The tranny will get randomly stuck in 2nd, and sometimes 3rd gear. When it does, I can not shift to any other gear, or neutral. This happens when going from 2nd to 3rd, or 3rd to 4th. When this happens the shifter stays in the neutral position. I then remove the shift linkage cover from the trans, align the shift forks into neutral, and put the cover back on and it is fine for another 20 miles till it does it again.
Also 3rd gear is ALWAYS hard to get into. It doesnt grind, but 2nd to third is always a no go. I have to go 2nd to neutral, then shake the shifter side to side, then go into 3rd. Same sometimes happens with 3rd to 2nd.
Car had new cables when I got it, but not sure if they were put on correctly or not.
Thanks in advance guys.

$50... Its a Sunfire.
Come on, I'm sure someone on this forum has had one of these apart and would know whats going on.
Im sure not everyone on here just buys a fartcan, throws on an unpainted rice body kit, a bunch of crap from Advance Auto, and trys to race everyone they see. No offense to anyone, just around here thats all I see with the owners of these cars.
Sounds like your 3rd gear synchro is worn out, learn to double clutch and rev match.
Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.

Has nothing to do with a synchro. A synchro wouldnt cause it to get stuck in gear, or out of any gear, and shifting the forks by hand woudnt temp fix a synchro.
And if you actually understand the reasoning behind double clutching, rev matching, heel&toe downshifts, ect, you would know that it isnt going to the help situation one bit. I bet I've raced Road Course since before you had your license.
Read too fast, I wouldn't keep them in gear but it would make it hard to get into gear.
What does driving ability and experience have to do with this? If you've ever driven a non synchronized transmission you would know that double clutching and rev matching are a necessity. So if you have worn synchros it will help to engage gears quicker and smoother.

Wow....
Blew it up, build numbers coming soon
I guess misreading the OP makes me clueless?
Or are you saying that rev matching does nothing for a synchronized transmission?

1- Check the clutch master cylinder reservoir to be sure it's full
2- Check for a bent shift cable by the transmission even if they are supposely new
3 - Take off the console inside the car and check to be sure nothing is loose or blocking the shifter
4- Unhook the shift cables on the tranny and shift the gears by hand on the tranny. If it ever get blocked, you need a new tranny otherwise move the shifter and see if it get stuck.
5 - It's a good thing to ignore somebody that says you need to double clutch our cars.
A bad synchro is a bad synchro. Even if you double clutch or rub it untill it comes, it will always do the same thing.

I never said you need to double clutch, I just said that it can help on a tranny that is on it's way out.
