Geo Storm Internals Swap??? Help!
Monday, December 14, 2009 6:26 PM
Hey guys,

I have recently started having some transmission issues in my 98 2200 with a 5 speed. It seems from what I have gathered the Isuzu does not have the best differential in the world. So, I was poking around and found out that the 90-93 Geo Storms had much stronger diffs.

To the best of my knowledge the SOHC came with 3.58 (like the Isuzu) or 3.83 gears, and the DOHC had 4.11s. I thought I read somewhere, not on here, that the 4.11 diff has to be machined to fit. Is this true?

I was also thinking about just buying the trans from the Storm and swapping out EVERYTHING (gears, synchros, shift forks, shift rails, input shaft, counter shaft, etc.) into my Isuzu case. Is it possible to do this? Or is it just the diff that is interchangeable? I ask because my trans as a whole is probably going to fail very very soon, and I want to have another one (or a donor for the stocker, like a Geo) ready to go in when she blows.

I hope that someone who has done this swap before can shed some light on this for me. I would like to complete the whole project on my Christmas vacation.

Thanks,

Wes

Yes, 95-99 Isuzu trannies have weak spider gears in the differential. Yes you are correct that the 90-93 Geo Storms / Isuzu Stylus have stronger differentials. You can also find the stronger diff's in 90-94 2.2L OHV 5spds found in Jbodies

Yes you are right on both the FDR's from the trannies. You do not have to machine anything to fit. Whichever FDR you choose, make sure you use the matching input shaft from the same trans and swap the gears on it ( if you choose to do so )

1991 Isuzu Stylus. It has the DOHC

Gear Ratios
First 3.909:1
Second 2.150:1
Third 1.448:1
Fourth 1.027:1
Fifth 0.829:1

Final Drive Ratio 4.117:1

Impulse/Storm SOHC
1st 3.272
2nd 2.043
3rd 1.448
4th 1.027
5th 0.829
FDR 3.833

Yes, you should be able to swap the internals from the older Isuzu trans into your newer 2.2 case. When mine was rebuilt, I found a master rebuild kit with new syncros, but they are getting hard to find. A lot of the bearings are still available

Thanks so much! The transmission actually went out yesterday morning, haha. Looks like I am gonna have a fun project over my time off.
