Cant get tranny out
Sunday, January 10, 2010 9:27 PM
So me and my boss got my tranny in my 99 Z24 unbolted last night and seperated from the motor. The plan was to just drop it out and lift the new one in but its kinda stuck. I know this sounds stupid and feel free to make fun of me but I need help. The tranny is basically just sitting in the engine bay. The mounts are out there just isnt enough room to remove it. I know plenty of people on this site have swapped trannys in these cars and it shouldnt be this hard. What am I forgetting? A local mechanic that comes into my work all the time says I need to lower the sub-frame. Is this what needs to be done? Any help will be greatly appriciated. Its a 5-speed just to clarify.

Also, what is the recomended fluid for this tranny? Since the 'new' transmission is used I was gonna put some of the Lucas Oil Transfix in it and I was thinking either some Royal Purple high-performance manuel trans fluid or just 10W-30 but wasnt sure what the best thing was. The dealer told me I needed GM manuel transmission fluid but that poop is expensive and I dont want to have to go to Chevy every time I need tranny fluid.

It is a tight fit, and you have to twist the tranny to get it to come out.

I have always found it alot easier when u trim the little ear off the subframe on the inside. As for the fluid, you need GM synchromesh fluid.

Also the synchromesh can be found at most parts store, made by Penzoil.
