Taking my tranny out tomorrow.

What are some tips or advice that I will need to make this job a little easier to do? Should I do the PJ (daflyinskwirl) mod where you shave off some of the subframe? Or take the whole sub frame off? I have the f23 getrag in a 02 ls sport cavalier. I WILL have power tools and a engine hoist if needed. What should I do to support the engine? What should I look out for when doing this? I have never taken the tranny out of my car so this will be the first. But I helped my buddy take his tranny out of his 92 se-r sentra and it looks a lot easier than mine...lol

Here is the story of why I need to replace or fix my tranny.
I was racing and after I won I let off the throttle and it started making a grinding noise on decell so I found out it was my differential(too many burnouts) so I got a spare tranny in the garage with a good dif, I am going to take the dif out of the tranny and put it in the other. Any thoughts?

it would be a whole lot easier getting the tranny in and out if you simply cut the sub-frame, you don't need an engine hoist to hold the engine just a tall jack and a jack stand worked for me the fun part is taking the bell housing apart........

You can use something like this to support it, much easier than a jack because it's out of the way.

Does any one have any photos of the sub frame piece that needs to be cut?

Top right corner of the picture, right above where the K brace bolts, it's the ear on the subframe. I've had my tranny in and out twice without cutting it, but it is a pain, next time it get's cut.

Do I cut both ears or just the one on the left? Thanks.

Just the one on the left.

Might want to check the clearances of the new diff in the old case. I did not shim mine and it only took about 10000 miles to be noticably bad. Just a heads up.

I'm having a hard time taking the tranny apart. I got it to the point of where I can almost get the bell housing off but something is still holding it on. I took the plastic cover off by the input shaft and removed the clip thats on the bearing but it still just won't come off. Do I have to take the actual bolt off that is on top of the bearing? I have tried and input shaft just turns. Is there any way to hold the input shaft without damaging it?

Can you move the bell housing around of is it still bolted solid to the engine?

No I'm talking about taking the spare tranny apart so I can take the differential out. And it will come about an inch apart but wont come any further.

That bolt needs to come out. I used an old clutch disk to hold the shaft. If you have one, put it over the shaft then iinsert your socket extension threw the clutch plate. The bolt will then turn out.

I did not shim the diff, I got a pro at the tranny shop to do it.

Ahhh, I've never had a Getrag apart, but on the Isuzu you have to remove a small cover and unbolt a plate that holds the fork pins in place. I would assume there is something along the same lines on the Getrag. Be careful, as the plate holds a few ball bearings in, you don't want to loose those.

Well I got everything of and taken apart and it is worse then I thought. The tranny has a tooth missing on the big gear on the diff and the other gear that it contacts. It is pretty bad so It looks like I will be on my third getrag whenever I can get some more money.

Sucks man. How are the smaller gears in the diff?

Mine is the Isuzu, but yeah I haven't been too impressed. They seem to die at about 100k, and the last time I had to fix mine the nut on the end of the input shaft came loose, and allowed the whole shaft to move. Took out a bearing and a seal. I got lucky. $300 rebuild kit and I was ready to fo.
