My roommate's 97 2.4l 5 speed Sunfire just developed this issue where you cannot shift it. You can put it into gear just fine, but you cannot get it to come back out to go into the next one. I looked at the shifter cables (both ends) and they seem to be attached and moving into gear but then it is stuck and you have to manually shift the car at the trans to get back to neutral. if the cables are detached at the trans, you can move the shifter around by pulling on the cables under the hood, so I don"t think they are broken. She has very little money and I am trying to get her out of my Grand Prix, so any help would be awesome. If this has been covered before I am sorry , i suck at searching forums. TIA. Bear

The clutch pedal feels fine, it engages and disengauges fine. It happened as she shifted into second, but it does it in all gears. You can shift from Neutral to whatever gear you choose, but it won't come backout unless you shift it at the linkage at the trans.
to me it sounds like the cables. i experienced the same issue with my 1997 z.i don't think that the cables break i think over time they stretch and stuff. i would recommend getting new shift cables.
Turbo lag is a courteous head start
OK, this is easy. You'll need to perform 2 tests:
Test 1, Motor off. Disconnect the cables at the transmission and try to shift the transmission through the gears. If it doesn't work, it's the transmission. If that works, go to test 2.
Test 2. Motor running. Disconnect the cables at the transmission and have someone hold the brake on and depress the clutch pedal. Try to move the transmission through the gears. If it doesn't want to shift correctly, it's either the slave cylinder or clutch master cylinder.

Forgot this: During test 2, if it shifts correctly, it's the cables.
