I got some serious problems on my hands at the moment org,my drivers cv shaft keeps blowing the inner joint.
I've been through two different axles from Oreillys in the last week .Not sure whats causing it,hoping somebody here might have the answer.
Last Monday i replaced a 3 month old shaft cause the outer boot had two holes in it and it was spiting grease everywhere.
So i replace that shaft with a NEW one from Oriellys, and two days later it's leaking grease from the inner joint, the band clamp wasn't tight enough, from what i can gather.
And on Friday while turning my car around in my drive way,it blows the inner joint completely out.
So today i picked up another NEW shaft from Oreillys, put it in and take her for a drive,i don't make it 2 miles down the road, when i go to turn around to head home, and the sum of biznitch blows the inner joint completely out of the socket, i get it towed home and find my reverse switch is now broken off along with my shaft.
So here are some pics of the carnage.
So I'm totally clueless as to whats causing this? Bad parts? bad tranny? dunno,PLZZZ can somebody help me.
Check your ball joints and tie rod ends if its not that that somethings causing it to bind and break
Erik Packard
Are you sure they are the correct shaft? ARe you abusing them? Does your diff. bind up?
Okay, think about this... We have a shaft...with a joint thats captured by a cup at one end and only comes apart if the joint is pulled out of said cup...
So how do things like this happen? Everyone together kids...
Bad motor mounts, or something is loose, broken, or bent. You need to find out why the length between the transmission case and the inside of the wheel bearing is longer than it should be. Thats the only way this happens... I don't understand why that is so damn hard to understand... Joints dont just "blow out" like that... Its a solid shaft.
Reminds me of when this @!#$ came into Napa trying to get us to warranty a third CV axle for the same problem on a 93 caravan, which has a TSB out for this very issue...the solution? New motor mounts due to sagging powertrain pulling one inner CV out.

^^^ I have fairly new front end components,on both sides of this car.
Poly upper and lower motor mounts
Poly ca bushings,i did check the control arm bolts, their there and tight.
Rack and pinion with new outer tie rods, less than 5 months old.
New ball joints, maybe pushing a yr old, still firm to move the ball around.
My struts are new tokico hp's on goldlines, with new strut mounts.
I just put on a gm strut bar a few weeks ago, pretty sure that has nothing to do with it.
No grinding/binding in the tranny, while in the air,but only one tire will spin,i guess my spiders are getting wore out?
And i was wondering about my tranny mounts tho, they aren't really bad shape, but their is alot of cracks in the rubber.
I looked over everything today, and from me eye balling and prying on everything with a 3ft pry bar, everything it tight,so i have no idea.
I haven't been dropping the clutch or beating on it,its my dd so i need it to be reliable,so i don't see much play time with this car.
I'll check it over again tomorrow after work and see whats up,btw anybody know what the length of the shaft is on our cars?
Transmission mounts being worn could be your issue...might be allowing just enough movement to offset the drivetrain. I would get those done and reset the motor mounts and see if that fixes your issue.
Compressed length of Driver side shaft on 01-05 Cavs and Sunfires is 595mm or 23 3/8"

Alex appreciate your help, i will order some new tranny mounts tonight, and post up what happens.
I took another long look today after work, got my pry out and everything looks fine, the tranny mounts i can move up and down with the pry bar,
least the front mount anyways,i couldn't get to the back one.
Fixed the reverse switch and wiring, going to pick up a new shaft tomorrow and measure it first.
Going to also tear down my strut, and go over it.
OK did some more investigating today. Here are some pics
OK top pics show how much gap i have between the knuckle and the shaft. It moves a total of 1 3/4'' till it bottoms out on the bearing.
Thats way to much movement,i can feel the CV joint on the inner joint at the very edge of the cup,so something is differently wrong.
Here's my inner boot compressed
Here's my inner boot with the shaft extended to the bearing.
I took my strut apart, and i couldn't find anything wrong with it.
Then took my ca off and found this, not sure if it matters.
I kinda straightened the bushing back to normal again and reinstalled.
Here's a outer view of everything,i really cant see anything out of whack. So i messed with the upper motor mount, but didn't net me any difference.
umm y isn't your axle not pressed in all the way?
Cause if i press it in all the way,it pulls my inner joint completely out, that's why i made this thread,to try to solve it.
I had the same problems with Advance Auto Parts Shafts (2 sets). The boots are just too stretched out when the car is on the ground and taken to full rotation, either to the left or the right.
The fix that I did was I broke all the CV boot bands and positioned the boot to where it doesn't pull off and spread the grease everywhere (more compressed instead of stretched out). The smaller bands were off the grooves when I was done. I'll take some photos for clarification. I haven't have a boot pop off since.

Yeah post up some pics, cause i cant figure out whats going on,the shaft is the correct length, but the boot gets pulled to far out, which causes my shaft to pull out.
I did notice that between the last four shaft Ive been through, the boots were all different, some had more ribs than others.I'm really getting tired of these cheesy parts.
compare length of o'reilly part to part from different part store. My best bet is they are giving you the wrong part. but it is in thier system as the right one. Same thing has happened to me on a tortoise before
Okay here you go if you dont want to have the problem again, the stock shaft is about 2 inches longer than the replacement shafts that Advance and Orileys offer. Go find one at a junk yard, i went thru a cradle-a arms struts trannys frame machiene and after all that it was just a axle that was made wrong.

Any body have a factory shaft for sale that's longer than what i have?
I really need to find the measurements for the stock shafts,i cant find any and gm around here isn't any help.
Can any body measure their axle so i can compare????
Thanks.
You are buying shafts for a 95-99, I GUARANTEE thats the problem. They are a little shorter on the drivers side than the 00+.

Where can i find a shaft just for a 00+ CAVI.
Everybody that i found sells them for 95-03 so i have no clue where to buy just for the 00+
Ok, now that Im home and can see the pics. What I originally thought was the problem cant be. I remembered that I used Isuzu axles on all my getrag swapped cars and it was NOTHING like that. Im thinking 1 of 2 things.
1. They gave you the wrong axle, possibly for a 2nd gen?
2. Your tranny mounts are really screwed. Although I highly doubt that because if they were, your transmission would sitting alot lower and the axle would practically be touching the subframe.
Get a junkyard axle and compare the lengths.
OK, well I'm in the Denver area at the moment,so I'll call around and see if i can locate a scrap yard with one.
Trust me its the shafts, if i had one i would send it to you. I broke two transmission cases because of this. We set the orileys and advance shafts beside the stock one and they were both at leasdt 2" shorter.

Ok thanks now I just got to find a factory piece.
OK i found a factory axle in Denver for 40 bucks, the only problem its not abs.
So when i get home I'll see if i can press the relucter ring off of the other piece and press it on this one.
And the measurement was 243/8-1/2 around that area but its longer than mine.So it should work.
shouldn't 04 and 05 use the correct axle too, maybe, just maybe every parts catalog is wrong. Shafts should be the same for 00-05. I'd try and get an 05 axle from the parts store.
