just throwing some ideas out there and one was trying to get it to come out of the hole a little better so im wondering about the 4t40e and FDR's (final drive ratio for those who fail at acronyms).
as far as i know the stock LD9 4t40e has a 3.91 FDR. i'd like to see something like possibly a 4.11 or higher. a search turned up a v6 trans having i think 3.62 so thats going the wrong way...
david? jeremy? ben? josh? acer? anybody know?! hehehe thanks guys.

Just break down and have some custom gears made Brad
I'm interested to find out what there is though. I wonder if you could try getting on some of the Isuzu truck and small car forums to see what ratios they have.
I'm sure someone is rock crawling an Isuzu truck, and they must use crazy high FDR's. They might be too high though.
Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
According to my 4T40E GM manual there is a 4.10ish FDR and a 3.42 FDR or something like that, I'm going 100% of memory, but I have NEVER found what the 4.10 came from...or where to get my hands on one. I'll try to hunt down the book and scan the info.

sounds good mike, (i should have put ur name in. i forgot. i failed. post is edited
)
a 4.10 would be fricking amazing. no more slow bogged out POS launches. it'd flash to 3000 and GO.

If i remember right there was a 4t45 in a pontiac that had the 4.10 drive ratio. And if i remeber correctly it will fit into a 4t40. Ill see if i can find the info.
I found my notes....4t40e is only available in 3.63 FDR the 4t45e in the pontiac g6 (base model only) has an FDR of 3.91
3.91 isn't bad, much better than 3.63.
BTW, wow did I fail up there, that's what I get for trying to sneak a post in at work and not really reading the thread very well, haha. My bad.

the 4t40's only came with up to the 3.91. as per gm. idk if other trans's fdr's will work or not, otherwise you have to go custom.
and it didn't just come on z's. i have a base model with just a sunroof and i have 3.91 fdr.
Probably because you won't be able to shift as fast as that Eco is going to want to rev, lol
It can't be stock though, what have you done to it?

yes your are correct
cough cough 10k rpms cough cough
i did buy the tranny from SMG Motoring, and yes it is badass! i spend enough on that tranny to buy a nice used maybe 00-02 cavy but what the heck its built and in the car. this year ive had some engine troubles and only made 2 decent runs and at that were only 1/8 mile runs, with a 2.4 ish 60' and 1-2 shift at 6000 the car ran 9.42 @ 79.75. now my best run is 8.65 @ 82.05 so i know it had hella power. let me explain
F23 - 3rd gear - 193whp about 7600 - 149tq about 5100
4t45e - 2nd gear - 178whp about 7800 - forgot the 8000 MSD rev limit was active and that sumbitch was climing at a 60-70deg angle still
yes i like to ramble but what im saying if you do some of the math, there is a 20% loss of power from the F23 to the 4t45e tranny and i put down nearly the same numbers, that was only 3rd gear 2nd gear compairson.
i know im a little off topic but its ok, allright i was told by Fred that my tranny 4t45e has a G6 conversion gears, something like 38 33 instead of the 35 35, so it makes simmiar to the F23 in gear ratio wise :0
not sure what else to babble about so im out

So the 4t45e will just bolt right into our cars correct? I remember reading that a while back.
yes it will just bolt up but . . . . .
i run a MSD shift controller because i had a F23 and i run a ACCEL DFI computer, so for it to work right out of the box that i dont know
good questions

The 4T45E will bolt to the L61, but doesn't the LD9 have a different bell housing?

yes... but maybe we could get lucky and the our bellhousing would bolt right up
I feel like taking a tinkle on an ecNOtec...
I could be wrong but Im pretty sure the malibu with the 2.4 came with the 4t45e because it was a bigger car.
The 3400 engines were the only ones to come with the 4T45E in the n-bodies... but you DO NOT want that transmission... the 4T45E is a POS as far as I've ever known from hearing the woes of those who are unlucky enough to have it.

@turboalero
Ive been doing some reading and they were more common in grandams with v6's. I guess I was wrong about the 2.4 but what i did find was replacement part numbers and the final drive units share part numbers between the 4t40e and 4t45e. having trouble finding the 3.91 g6 setup though.
Ok I found some more info. To get a 3.91 FDR you need 32/38 drive/driven gears, a new chain, and a diff with a 3.29 gear. Apparently the gears and chain affect the final drive ratio not just the gear set.
Link to info
I found another link that says the factory service manual says the cobalt ss autos have 3.91 using 34/38 chain drive and 3.29 gears. Also that the 3.63 FDR is 34/38 chain drive with 3.05 gears
