offset help

I want to get some 18x7.5" rims for my cavalier, whats the mostly used offset? would I be safe with a +48 or what should I use? I already know what size tire I can use, just want the rims to sit right, I'm also lowered on Eibach Pro Kit springs.

ok, sounds great, so correct me if I'm wrong, the higher the number the more they're pushed in? and the lower the offset the more they're pushed out?
