cluster un plugged car wont start
Wednesday, November 22, 2006 9:04 AM
Ok I have a 97 sunfire GT and I know that if the cluster is un-plugged the car wont start, I am wanting to do all digital gauges, and am inquiring on if anyone has ever overrided this? I mean the cluster is obviously just continuing the circuit so it should be a matter of connecting the wires I would think?

thanks

Its not just "continuing a circuit" (actually the word would be completing). The problem is the theftlock will inhibit the vehicle from starting if it doesn't see the cluster (only happens on the 99-). If you do the theft lock relearn in the FAQ you should be able to start the vehicle, the problem is you can't see the cluster when you are trying to do the procedure.

I tried the theftlock relearn when I did mine after 4 times it still wouldn't work so I plugged the cluster back in and it started right up.

Ended up pulling all the needles and leds off the cluster and trimmed it down along the edges as much as I could and leaving it hooked up and tucked in the dash.

Thanks John I also talked to Vince he is doing the same thing my problem is that I have no room unless i tuck it in where the airbag was. my problem is I am looking at 12 gauges in total, 2 5 1/4" speakers, centre channel and 2 6.5" widescreen tv's so im lacking room to "hide" the cluster it looks like im going to have to rip out the under dash and see if I can re work this a little.

Thanks guys for the help greatly appreciated.

I like the new gauges a lot better then the factory ones. Plus I don't have to look at the idiot lights being on since I've also repinned my PCM to run a 2000 and up with the Supercharger Reflash.

I was going to do a passlock module but it was a holiday weekend and no place was open to buy one. I might take the dash back off and do one this winter.

John, what dummy lights are you talking about? I didn't re-pin my PCM, just swapped in a 2k2 PCM.

I also have a few lights on, low coolant, low oil, check engine light, no RPM's, no engine temp.

justin as long as the wires are long enough you shouldn't have any problem hiding it under the lower dash portion. worst case you'd just have to extend the wires as long as thats possible. dont know why it wouldnt be.

Yeah Justin. I'm sure you can find some room under the dash easily.

I had extended the wiring on my cluster last season...wasn't hard what so ever. I actually went to the junkers, took the wiring from another sunfire, and when I wired mine up at home, I simply just spliced in the wires according to color. (you do however have doubled up colors, but one is slightly darker/lighter than another...and the thickness is a bit different...but still hard to notice, just look and feel it closely).

I checked last night the lower dash wont work you have to rmember I have 5 tv's going ahead of the drivers seat I have to stuff all the av boxes for modes and high output signaling up there so it looks like it will be easiest to send it over to the passenger side and then just splice off of the wires to the new gauges, they will be going all the way along the front of the dash anyways so they needed to be lengthened.

Just get a passlock bypass module... the proper and easy way to do it

Passlock is in the cluster on the 95-99 cars... in the BCM on the 00-05 cars.
