Has anyone on here tried installing a ratchet shifter in a J? I had a B&M megashifter in my old trans am, and I kind of miss it. I just found one for a 3 spd GM on ebay, and it's really cheap. I'm sure it can be done, but I was wondering if anyone here knew if it would hook up easily, and also if the gear indicator on the dash runs off the shifter, or the transmission. I am planning to keep as much of a stock look as possible, so I want to hide the body of the shifter, with it's built in indicator under my factory console. Thanks

why would you want to change a automatic shifter?
its not like you use it that much....
^^A lot of people ask that question. For me it was "Why shorten it? To get from P to D Faster?".
On An auto its more about looks over funtionality, However shortenting the shifter made it more comfortable for a hand rest. Not to mention it looks wicked.
THE TINMAN: I don't know anything about the 3spd trans or if the shifter will work. I can say this, Find a way. Its a badass unit.
A ratchet shifter would look killer as long as you mated it to work with your console.
I have shorten my auto shifter by .5 inches just so I can open and close my screen with out it hitting the shifter. Im probably going to take it down lower just so it doesn't look so odd.

looks cool if u do it i wanna see pics and u may know this but that link is just for the boot not the shifter
thanks for all the replies. yeah, it,s more cosmetic than anything else. it's also for shifting through gears manually. and as an added plus it will discourage my girl (aka the rim wrecker) from borrowing my car, lol. Anyway, I did notice that that auction was for the boot only, I posted the wrong link, but it showed the same shifter so I just let it go. I think I'm going to go ahead and try it. I'll post pics when I get it worked out
I was all ready to try this a few months ago but was nervous about the throw on the trans selector lever. If you don't have the shifter points set correctly to the detent in the trans you can really screw stuff up. I'd be very interested if you end up working it out. I ended up just threading the top of my shifter for a B&M t-handle and manual shifter boot.
confused....the ebay link you posted was for a rubber shift boot..... in fact taken from the auction itself "Includes the rubber boot only."

Yea I hope you aren't referring to the link as a sale for the ratchet shifter. It is a sale for the boot replacement. A new ratchet cost upwards of 100-200 dollars. $23 would be a steal, but like already said, that link is for the boot.
