Fiberglassing this time of year

Well, I want to make a new sub enclosure for the cav to do away with the MDF behemoth I have now. So, I plan to fiberglass a enclosure into the spare tire well, just to hold 1 12" or maybe 2 10's.

My problem Is the Temp. It is 20*F here now and it will only get colder until spring roles around. I have a basement that I can work out off that stays about 60-65 *, but from where I would be working about 35 feet or so there is our boiler. Is this dangerous? are the fumes enough to cause an explosion? Any idea's or suggestions are welcome.

the fumes will go thru your venting system all thru the house, and its a tough scent to get rid of.

ive done it before, and lets just say others in the house were not very happy with me.

and if there is no circulation down there, you could ultimately ignite the fumes

your best bet is to do it out in a garage, even if it is cold, and just add a little extra MEKP(hardener) to compensate, but it will take the curing process a bit longer than usual

So, if I do it in colder temp, Add more Hardener?

Will it make the structure weaker? More fragile?

no it will just give you less them to work with the glass before it hardens up. the more hardener you use the quicker it will harden up on you before you can lay it down.

yes, add a little extra mekp helps out in the cold, not too much though, if it hardens too fast I hear it will become more brittle.

Also try using heat lamps or even use a heater and place it infront of your glass work. When I do this, I also create a "box" around my fiberglass work to help keep the heat consentrated in the one area instead of escaping throughout the garage.

Joey I get yelled at for glassing in the garage with the garage doors opened b/c of the smell... I don't think I'd be here today if I did it inside the house

ive got the same issue my units are all in an alcove in the garage itself so i can't even f/g in the garage in winter.

if you have a garage what i have done is go spend 20 bucks on a small little heater and some thin plastic, i made a tent out of the plastic about a 5'x5' x9' high tent and stuck the heater near the opening. after a few minutes you have yourself a 70 deg. workspace. use the respirater for the fumes though.
