Alright, I just bought some black synthetic leather vinyl and I'm looking to wrap those carpet peices on Sunfire door panels to start. I know how to get them off, I just wanna know, one, if I can use contact cement that comes in the tube and spread it on with a brush or a roller, and two if I'm wrapping over the existing carpet how good will this adhere? Will the carpet not absorb the glue?
Anyway, let me know, anything that will help me. And I'll post pics when I'm done!
When you say "carpet" are you referring to the fabric piece at the top rear of the door panel? When i recovered those pieces on mine I just stretched the vinyl over the stock material and stapled it on the back. Only thing about doing it that way is everything has to be stretched evenly.
Yep, that's what I'm talking about
Maybe my contact cement approach was the totally wrong idea, maybe stapeling would be the better route?
Just depends on the type of vinyl you are using and how you are going to go about recovering.
i personally would use contact cement on the face of the surface, then hot glue around the edges/back to tuck it.
just make sure you brush the contact cement out evenly and dont leave bumps because they will show up in the fabric
Thanks guys... As far as the hot glue goes, that's what I had planned initially. My main concern was using the contact cement ON TOP of the fabric... I'll check it out when I do it this weekend, but if I take that fabric off, what am I left with? Just a thin piece of plastic? If so, that'll be no good lol the vinyl I bought doesn't have foam or anything on the back side of it and without some sort of backing it would look weird, yeah?
Anyway, thanks for the input/help... feel free to add anything else. I'll get those pictures up Monday or Tuesday.

What plastic? The piece he is talking about wrapping is made out of something similar to particle board which is wrapped in fabric that has a layer of foam on the back of it. Yes he could remove the stock fabric and use contact cement, but the reason I suggested using staples and wrapping over the stock fabric is so that he can keep the foam which is there to act as a cushion.
i personally leave that stock fabric. it seems to hold better, and leaves a little cushion on it.
thanks for the compliment, it's a total step up from that carpet lol all I basically have left instore for the interior is, getting the rear seats covered in leather, getting new seats for the fronts, shortening the shifter (like you said), and probably a new carpet as there are some spots that are worn done pretty bad but luckily their under the floor mats... oh and some more electronics lol
yeah doesnt look too bad. are you going to convert the rest of the interior to black also? the black/charcoal/gray looks a lil off beside each other

what do you mean by "rest"... if you mean the panels, no, I don't plan on painting them black. Maybe you've got some suggestions? I'm all ears lol
