Exhaust Mufflers

I was looking on eBay, and there were a whole bunch of exhaust mufflers that I want to put on my 96 Pontiac Sunfire GT. I already have dual exhaust (stock) and I wanted to change them. I want to install one but I don't know how I would go about doing so. I think they're weld on, but I wouldn't know where to cut the old one off and replace it with the new ones (there's two due to my dual exhaust). Where do I cut and will each Sunfire muffler fit universally with my sunfire GT? My uncle welds so I need the info to help instruct him. Which do you guys recommend: Straight mufflers or dual (which means i'll have 4 outlets)? Which is louder and more powerful? Thanks alot.

First off, mufflers on stock piping is only gonna net you a grand total of 3 or 4 hp (if that). Secondly-- most of those ebay mufflers are really wide open (I think the one I used to have was about 3 inches through the middle) which is going to screw up the exhaust flow which will in turn lose you some noticeable low-end torque. (I speak from unfortunate experience on this one.)

That being said- you probably want to cut them off about half an inch from the muffler itself (those mufflers usually have a couple of inches on them , so this will give you a little extra material to work with- but it's easier to shave a little off than to put it back on). But honestly my advice would be to have a muffler shop custom bend some pipe for you while you're at it (get compression bent- not crush bent), and you'll have yourself a nice little cat-back for under $300 (or so) including the mufflers.

If you want noise, take off the resonator while you're at it. I personally don't like the sound that creates (it gets that irritating bees in a can noise), but it will definately be louder.

Good luck. Have fun.

I may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but at least I'm a pretty color
