Painting Brake Calipers/Drums
Monday, August 01, 2005 9:43 AM
After work today, I think I'm going to swing by AutoZone and pick up a brake caliper/drum painting kit. I was just wondering how I should go about painting them. I put my rims/tires on, but I've never done much more than that, except putting on my intake. How should I go about taking off the calipers/drums?

Any help is appreciated.

Well jack up your car and remove your tires.

The calipers are held on by 2 allen headed slide bolts. However i highly recommend leaving them on and just be carefull and paint them there. If you do decide to remove them, make sure that you hang them up so your not putting stress on the brake line, it breaks easily.

As for drums, you paint them while on the car.

Your drums just kinda hang out in space by themselves so painting them is no big deal. Lawnmower's right about the front ones just paint the caliper if you get any over
spray on the rotor don't worry the first time you hit your brakes it will come right off.

Check out the post in the exterior forum about paiting brakes it should help you out
but if you have any other questions at all feel free to ask.

And welcome to the org.

Paint them on the car its much easier, mask EVERYTHING you dont want painted very well, I.E. rotors, lines, etc. Make sure you take some lacquer thinner and clean them REAL good or the paint wont stick. If the kit comes with cleaner use that.

I finished last night, but it was dark, so I had to wait until the morning for a pic.

Personally i would have gone Gloss black. That way they never look dirty.

I was going to do black, but I decided they wouldn't have looked much different than what they were before....which was rust.
