Hey,
I'm toying with the idea of selling my 03, and buying a 2000-2002 Cavalier with the 2.4 and swapping it to an Ecotec. I know the Getrag works with both nicely. But I was wondering who thinks what engine is better. I could take my ecotec money and put it into making the 2.4 stronger if I wanted to go that route. Not to mention, skipping over the whole engine swap...thing. Any ideas/suggestions/"you're an idiot"'s/help would be appreciated.

Apparently you don't know enough The transmissions are both getrags, but they have different bellhousings. A 2.4 getrag won't bolt up to an eco.
Well Sweet.
lol
What else is there to know about them, durability, power, torque, where it will rev to. I know it's a ton of probably common knowledge, but I want to be sure before i have a valuable learning experience by buying an Eco to go with my 2.4 tranny.
you could always buy an 02 model with the eco. i now own an eco. i had an LD9 a week ago. in stock form they feel the same in power
I've been looking for an 02 with an Eco, but they're not exactly easy to find. Especially not for a halfway reasonable price. I'm looking for a second option.
yeah you are right that they are not easier to find, the only tip I can give you there is when online like autotrader.com or something it will say 2.2L but still have all the stuff the Z24 has/had i.e. front and rear lips Z24 rims or in the states as you are the LS chrome rims.......
I noticed here in canada the just call them Z24 on autotrader.ca, I guess alot of the used car dealers dont realize it the same well a better engine.
But why the change if you already have the eco, do you just like the body style of the 2000-2002 better? I would say get an eco, more and more parts becoming available. the 2.4 is a dead technology if you will.
I have one true love in my life...And my girlfriend sits next to me in it
Yeah, I'm looking for a coupe with power stuff, and a sunroof. I also like the 00-02 body style a lot better. But we'll see. I wouldn't mind finding an 03+ LS Sport that's not $10,000.
Damn turbo setup keeps me away from my poor poor Newbie minions...
My opinion, the ECOTEC is a very well respected and even more supported motor out of all J-bodies. The 2.4 really is an old motor and really a predicesor of an even older motor. The ECOTEC was something GM brought over from Europe and immediately beat the hell out of now making them run Top 5s in pretty much every FWD drag class.
Now money wise, if you can get the motor cheap, all the parts you need and have someone help you swap it out...it could work to your advantage and leave you enough money to boost it or whatever. Now, that money you could use for a swap COULD just be used to boost the hell out of your 2.4...I mean, it's not like you're looking for a 400 HP monster, you want a well driveable street tuner car that will probably run around 200-220 whp.
I think the deciding factor is your money in your pockets. If it's deep enough, go with the ECOTEC swap. If it's not, boost the 2.4. Can't go wrong in either way...

I'm leaning towards the Ecotec. As Shifted said, the bellhousings are different, are those swappable, or is the kind of thing where I'd have to find a whole new transmission?
the eco is much better than the 2.4. stock it may not have as much power as the 2.4 but it also has alot more potential then the 2.4
good luck with findint the 03+ for under 10 grand but yes it can be done! the things about the ecotec are ... aluminum block, its more reliable, and besides that, its smoother, quieter, and lighter. BUT the thing is one personal preferance!! You can boost the ecotec up pritty well with stock internals, as for the 2.4 you are at risk of breaking the internals! So think about what you want to do with the engine... if you plan on boosting it I would go with the ecotec, but if you just plan on doing very little with the engine you choose.
if i was you, i would leave the 2.4 in and take the money you would spend on aftermarket shut. isnt that the obvious choice?
yeah the eco is nice and maybe even better..considering amount of aftermarket....but you will be a lot quicker with a modded 2.4 than a stock eco.

TRUE !!! so sence you can find eather of them in a 00-02 (02 first ecotec) and then you dont need to swap it if you just get an ecotec in the first place!
I wouldn't trade my 2.4 for an Eco.

He's done a decent amount to his 2.4. i can't say i blame him for not wanting to swap it.
LD9 owns the eco... atleast in my world it does, im not a fan of the eco i like the ld9's better... and i have driven an eco and didnt like it...

so you are going to sell your 03 that had a Eco to buy a 2.4 that you wuld then swap out for an Eco?? from reading that first sentence thats what it sounds like. i dont know why you would want a 2.4 when a ecotec can be so much better, unless you mean the 2.4 ecotec
Hey Newbies; Dont Search Ebay, i got what you need right here
So why not just buy the 02 model with the ecotec in it?
I reallyl like my 2.4L but I've never driven a cav w/an eco, so I can't judge between the two.

I have driven both all the time at work(GM Dealer) and own an eco, Not a doubt in my mind the ecotec is a way better choice on every single level.....powerto weight, fuel consumption, and after market potential.....ect

if you have a 2.4 car, either keep it or sell it to someone who actually wants a 2.4 car and buy an eco car
my situation being a little different, I have the 2200 car and they made a billion of these and for the most part they all suck. it is actually worth it for me to do an eco or 2.4vvt eco swap

I don't actually read your posts
I stare them down until they give me the information I require
I would keep the ecotec. It's aftermarket support is far better for modifying and is on par with a Z24 or sunfire GT when stock.
Also for those who say its hard to find an eco for under 10K. I paid 10,300 for mine brand new 1SB with auto trans deleted in 2003.
You will get far better performance staying with what you have and just modifying it. If you like the older body style more. There are a good number of people on the JBO who have swaped older front/rears onto their cars. You could get some Z24 panels and you'd have your look without the hassle of an engine swap.
