hey everyone
I am new here. I was just wondering about some opinions you all might have. I have a stock 97 z24-5 speed. I want to do some mods to the engine, and if u had any sugestions that would to greatly appreciated. I will post some pics once spring time gets here. thnx
Save up and boost that bia!
how many miles are on it? if theres too many i would build er up a bit then boost it
mmmm boost
"Boost tuning"....... have you had your 8 PSI today?
future name of the winter shop!!!
welcome to
there is about 100 thousand miles on it. i was hoping i wouldn't have to open the engine up. But if i have to, i have to i guess. Any idea how much it will cost ? And if i do that, what other mods shouyld i consider ?

probaly more than what you are willnig to spend
most start with an intake and go from there.
i started with suspersion. strut tower bars front and back, koni reds, and eibach sportlines.
it all really depends on what goals you want with the car

Yeah. i was thinking of an intake, fuel delivery, headers, exhaust, and spark plug wires etc. If there are any particular brands that seem to work better, or any setup that works, the help will be greatly appreciated.

nice start. but since you have a Z24 which has the 2.4 in it. you dont have spark plug wires. and no need to upgarde the feul system unless you are doing some sort of boost like a charger, turbo, or nitrous.
an intake is just that. an intake. no difference between the $200 AEM ones and the $40 ebay intakes. they all do the same thing
i have a pacesetter Header. ceramic coated. works great and so do a lot of other people have that header.
some people buy a pre-made exhaust. like a megans catback. or pick out a muffler (borla) and get one custom made yourself

yeah sorry about the plug wires, i am writing this at work, kinda tired lol. i guess my biggest question since my car is a daily driver is to get any really big horse power gains, i either rebiuld and get a blower, or just put on exhaust and be satisfied huh ? As far as the exhaust, is it better to buy the complete system or like u said pick each piece out indiviually. I have never done exhaust on a car this new, I used to drive trucks so it was alot easier i guess lol, just duals and a snapy muffler is all i used to get done. Thanks for all ur help.

thats really up to you i guess.
i paid over $400 for my exhaust system. it was an impulse buy at the time and if i could do it different, id build my own. oh well. you can make your own exhaust anywhere from $100 to $200 and see the same gains from a premade system. plus with premade its either a hit or miss on it fitment. meaning the pipes rubs against somewhere underneth.

thnx, i guess i will have to start shopping around then. I am trying to find a local shop that specializies in sport compacts. And as far as the mods go, price is the only thing stopping me. I was tthinking of puting a body kit on it but the streets where i live are a little to ruff, but i was thinking of a different spolier, and maybe putting one of the reaer window spoiler's on. Anyway I will post some pics when the weather is warmer.
COLIN SCHNOR welcome to the J>B>O> .since u have a daily driver, 100k, and kinda new, i'd start w/ a few bolt-on goodies. you'll deff. feel a power difference, but don't expect to have a rocket ship. for starters id go w/ an intake, catback/full exhaust, header, and maybe a throttle body(my fav. mod). and like stated above an intake is an intake. it's a pipe w/ a filter on it. ebay is just as good as aem, weaponr or what ever else is out there.
People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......
ok, yeah i wasn't expecting to have an incredibly fast car after a few simple mods. but i was wondering about a throttle body, wasn't sure if it was worth while. I am worried about wrecking a body kit too, kinda ruff streets around here lol.
another piece of advice. make sure you know what your getting into.
example: body kits are nice (some are), but an area where you have pot holes, bumps, crappy roads etc etc aint a good idea. youll mess up your kit

yeah, i think i am just going to do some mods to the engine, redo the interior, and give the car new paint, but keep it pretty much stock looking, kinda a sleeper car, well maybe not. lol
sleepers are nice

yeah, i know. I had a punk kid in a crapped out hyndui accent wanting to race the other nite down one of the streets. I laughed and drove away lol.
yeah i wasn't about to street race, a little too fast and the furiuos for me, besides he had a stock car with decals on the door and tinted glass
Welcome to the
My only suggestion is figure out how much you want to spend on your vehicle before hand and how much power you're looking to make (realistically...there are too many people who join saying they want 400 WHP cavaliers). With those 2 key figures, you should be able to do the right thing.

i was budgeting about 5 grand, but that includes interior and exterior as well, not gonna get crazy about exterior, ruff roads around here and all, i was wondering what u thought of the spoilers on the rear window, other than that i was gonna keep my car pretty much looking stock on the outside.

Yeah, we were all like that one day but I don't think I ever said 400 whp though. I know we usually have this high and unrealistic goal when we first start modifying like when we expect to make 200 hp with bolt ons lol

i know that with a few simple bolt ons, i ain't gonna get a bunch of extra power lol. but i do want a little more especiallly in the mid range if i can. When i bought the car it did have a cold air intake and aftermarket muffler, but i want something a little more raspy. will it get that way with a header and whole aftermarket setup ?

Possibly.
Remember, there are different things that play effect to how your exhaust sounds:
1. What kind/style of muffler you are using
2. Whether you have resonators or not and if so, how many
3. The size (diameter) of your piping
4. Whether you have a catalytic converter or not

run away... while theres still a chance......
