Im new, got a question..

Well I dont have a J-body but my brother does. I have a 1991 Taurus SHO. Anyway, when you get on the gas pretty hard, all that happens is that the RPM's just jumps up. The car does not pick up any speed. Ive been told that these transmissions are GM's basic as they come and that actually the engines are a little to much power for the tranys. I mean my brother doesnt take very good care of his car to begin with which doesnt help, so any ideas? He has a 1996 Sunfire 2.2, auto.

the fact that its a 2.2 and an auto dont help the problem. if there is even one.

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!

I thought the autos were stronger that the manuals, especially the isuzu. My first guess is its a torque converter problem.

Well I talked to some guys that work at Advance Auto and I told them what is happening and they told me thats not good, but they didnt tell me whats wrong with it.

so you punch it and the rpm's jump and you dont pick up any speed at all? or is it just a delay between the rpm jump and mph jump?

Yea when you punch it all that happens is that the RPM's jump really high, to like 6 grand, you have to get off of it. Cuz you will blow the tranny up. And it doesnt pick up any speed. I dont kno if this has anything to do with it but from a stop then you get on it pretty good, it will shift at like 30-35 mph.

could be pressure plates in the torque converter slipping...i doubt it but maybe a gear is out...somthing in the drivetrain is slipping/ not grabbing ...sorry wish i could help you more...im sure somone with more tranny knowlage could help

Your planetary gears aren't shifting properly. You NEED to get that fixed. expect to pay quite a bit.

^^^^Do not listen to that.... at all... there is absolutely no way he could know that the planetary gears are the problem and it is soooo unlikely that it makes my head hurt. The auto transmissions are connected to the engine through hydraulics (torque converter.) When it revs out like that it means that there is not a good connection between the two, pretty much giving the same effect as if a manual had a slipping clutch. If the fluid level is fine (first thing you should check,) then the likely cause would be the torque converter. If it's not the torque converter then you have a worn out clutch or band inside the trans or possibly a blockage or stuck valve in the valve body... either way the trans will need to come out to fix the problem.
Before it ever started to rev out, was it doing the same thing to a lesser extent, then shifting REALLY hard into gears? When you started it up in the morning and put it in gear, did it take a while to engage? If so you probably just need to add fluid. If the fluid has been bad or gone for a long time it owuld be a good idea to drop the pan and replace the filter and add all new fluid.. if that does fix it there is an internal problem.

Just makin sure he sees it.
That's the first thing u need to do.
My tranny did the same thing. Found out it was like 4 quarts low of tranny fluid.

now are you sure the car is in drive? and not neutral?

im sorry, i had to, u know... he did say he owns a ford after all...
just rippin on the non- J

go with what M I N I O N - Sinbird says.. because what he suggested is more than likely the problem.

good luck
