I do not have a special (chiped) key to my car that i just bought...I got a new key made at walmart, and it works. the anti theft light goes on at ignition, but goes off shortly after...Is my passlock 2 by-passed?
cavalier keys are not chipped.

...before you question why, it helps us to understand what year you have, so we can better help YOU.

Do as she said, but ill help you anyways. Passlock doesnt work with a chip. Do a google search for passlock to better understand whats going on. Your security light should go on for a few moments when you start the car. At least in Grand AMs it does.
Not 100% sure but i belive its all in your lock cylinder and not the key.
there are different versions of passlock. Depending on the year of your car depends on the version. Fill out the registry and we can tell you what version you have and how it works.
my car is a 02 cavalier Z-24 2.4l, if i am still not registered please tell me...I am asking all these questions, because I need to install a remote starter...the first info i came across on the net about passlock 2, was talking about chips in the key, so that is why i assumed that was how it works...just trying to figure out before i tear everything apart if i need a by-pass or not...

you are registered now, I see it
You will need a GM bypass module for the remote starter.
cavalier keys are not chiped, Some are usually got a magnetic source inside the keys metals, Usuallt the locks smith could tell you that.
As far as I was told by my gm parts supplier is that one of the cuts of the key on a 10 cut key are used for the passlock 2 systems. normally a hardware store key cutter screws up one of the cuts. The best part of a 10 cut key is it only uses one side of the 2 sided key to work the tumblers. So some copies dont work on both sides. There are three wires on your ignition cylinder that work the passlock system, yellow, black and white. I've heard of remote start installers cutting 2 of the three wires and putting a resistor in its place of equal value of the key in and turned on. The bypass thing that you buy is new to me. I hope this helps understand.

To let you know, if you're getting a remote start/security system installed, have someone that has worked on several cavs do it, or go to the dealer. I had a viper put in my 97 cav, and my anti theft light is almost always on, and every now and then it does set off my passlock system. ( Really sucks when I'm running behind on deliveries).
I have the bypass module installed on mine, even had a new updated one installed, and had a new security system brain installed, but it still sets off the passlock. Sadly enough, I can't remove it now, since it was somehow wired into the passlock system by inexperienced installers, and if I remove it, it will permanently activate the passlock.
I will be going to the dealership soon to get a few new keys made, just to see if it helps out a little though, the one I'm using is kind of worn out,
John, you bad!! Simple and to the point.

I found a simple FAQ on how to "by-pass"/disable passlock 2, I did it and it works...you just cut the yellow wire, and put it on a switch, make sure the switch is off, when wanting to remote start...the theft and service lights will come on, but the car thinks it is a malfunction and not a theft, and will continue to run...
