Digital odometer problem
Friday, May 25, 2007 5:33 AM
My 99 Cav's digital odometer's light blew out,I took apart the cluster and removed the bulb.
I took it to the dealer and the parts guy said the bulb was not in the GM mainframe,so it could not be ordered.
I am stuck now...Would anyone know where I can get a replacement bulb, without having to buy a junk cluster
just to get the bulb?

don't listen to him...it's harder that way....look for a 98-00 cluster from any cavalier or sunfire (if you want to change he design of your cluster) the will fit directly into your car with no modifications and the mileage will be store in your car computer so you don't have to worry about it. and you don't have to solder that new bulb into your cluster which is hard btw

Why cant you go to Autozone and find the same bulb and just use that?

GM uses a lot of bulb number #194 for the dash lights, almost all of them are #194

and your saying dont listen to me?

first off if he pulled the bulb out, its easy to go to a junkyard and just grab another free bulb. secondly like said above the miles are stored in the cluster. 00-05s are stored in bcm.

Yep as stated above. 99 miles are stored in the cluster, 00+ are stored in teh BCM. If you buy a new/used cluster from the junk yard, you are going to have to have GM reprogram the cluster. You will also have issues with the Theft System too, so it's not easier. Change the bulb out with something. You will have to do some carefull decontruction on the cluster though.

not true. a 00+ cluster will not work in a 99, and if he gets a 99 cluster yes it will swap, 98 clusters will not swap into 99's, they will but the gas doesnt read correctly cause the 98 gas sending unit is different ohms than the 99's.

but why do all that for just one bulb?

Cluster Fix

thats how i fixed mine.. cheap and the bulb has a long life span.

I never said that a 00+ cluster will work in his car. In fact I told him it will not.

The 95-99 clusters mileage is stored in the cluster, wether it be by mechanical or digital means.

And, I told him that it would be easier to swap the bulb.

i just went to an auto store, bought a bulb around the same size, bent out the wire connectors and soldered it on the pins where the orginal screwed in, cost 1.99 and about 10 minutes of time
