A/C Problems - Evaporator - Help!
Wednesday, June 20, 2007 4:54 AM
Hi - I have a 2000 cavalier and the air just stopped blowing cold. No warning - the compressor is working. Had it checked and the mechanic put freon in it. Worked 2 more days and died again. He put the dye in it but hasnt checked it with the light yet. He says probably the evaporator? He refuses to do because its too complicated? Any thoughts anyone? Thank you!

Well dont know about complicated, but it is time consuming, per Alldata labor guide, it shows 6.6 hours to remove and replace the evaporator core with a new one.

You've most likely got a sizable leak somewhere. I say sizable because it took two weeks for me to lose all my freon. I used the dye and had it all over my compressor. It was working fine but it had a leak so you could be in the same boat.

And if your mechanic refuses to do anything, I'd find another mechanic

So does this mean that maybe its not the evaporator (?) I mean I dont even know what an evaporator does but I do know its quite costly to replace.

I'm saying it might be and might not be the evaporator. The best thing you can do is have your mechanic check for any dye. It's much easier to fix a leak than to replace an evaporator, etc.
