2.2 liter pushrod aftermarket parts

Hello,

I a new here and have a question for you folks who are familiar with the GM 2.2 liter pushrod motor. I am a Mechanical Engineering grad student at the University of Texas, and am using this engine as the basis of my research on a concept called HEDGE(High Efficiency Dilute Gasoline Engine). I am using E85 as the fuel, and basically, this is a method of operating an engine where the intake charge is made of a mixture of about 30% EGR and the rest a stoich mixture of air and fuel.

I have gotten an Eaton M45 supercharger for this test engine, and will be boosting it from 10 to about 20 PSI, depending on test results.

What I am curious about, and have had trouble finding info on, is where to get good aftermarket parts for these. I am likely going to have the head milled down to increase the base compression ratio to around 13:1, and with the boost, will need a strong head gasket. Also I might need some new pistons. Any good sources for this and other stuff?

Thanks for the help. This engine is running on a test stand, but I chose it for my research because I have worked with these before and know them to be pretty durable and not too costly to fix. The other choice I had readily available was a Quad4, which we have about 10 of in total, but it seemed too complex for what I am doing initially.

Again, I appreciate the help.

you can either post here or email me directly at jonathan.bodenhamer@gmail.com

take care,

Jon

use a cometic head gasket and maybe try mantapart.com for the internals for the 2.2 or the 2.4

as far as the stock bottom end on the LN2 (btw what year is it?) i woudnt go much over 10-12 psi... and thats if its tuned well. If you do plan to run 20 psi. I would suggest more than just pistons. At that point i would recomend building the entire engine. And i certainly wouldn't trust the stock valve train at that amount of power either. what did you plan on doing to he head as well as machining down the valve seats? i would check out howell automotive, as well as JBP although there stuff tends to run a lil priceymanta parts has stuff as well...

FAIL!

mantapart is about the worst place to try to get anything from. karo has valves and connecting rods, and im sure ryne from TVR would be willing to help you get a set of pistons. use somebody respectable to get your parts. if you search for mantapart, you'll find this site is riddled with unsatisfied customers.

Thanks for the help so far. I will check the sites listed to see what they have available.

Jazer asked the engine year--I think it is originally from a 1992 or 1993 chevy cavalier, but I am not totally sure. The engine was donated to UT by GM and has spent its entire life on a dyno stand. It has not had a lot of use, though. I got it from a test set-up that was exploring the use of Compressed Natural Gas as a fuel and some hot start solution technology we were exploring.

I know that the levels of boost I am looking at subjecting it to are pretty high, but it will be run for short periods, so I am hoping it holds. If I do blow it up, I will fix it, though. Part of the testing process I guess.

Something that I know for sure is a problem with this way of operating an engine is knock, and I was wondering how tolerant this engine is of knock. I will have sensors to check this and will back off timing advance accordingly when I sense it, but can the motor take a little knock without blowing a piston or head gasket?

Thanks for the help.

Jon
