Whats the difference in all the Cavalier models?
Wednesday, September 19, 2007 4:29 AM
I mean I know this is problem a stupid question.
And I searched, but didn't find what I'm looking for.

RS
LS
Z24

What are the differences?
And are there more models than that?

I know the Z24 is has better performance, and different body parts; but what all is different?

The RS and LS have slight body differences whereas the z24 is actually a ^different motor^. There were actually several models of cavalier made (such as the GT) but the majority of them didn't have anything different under the hood.

rs is the rally sport which is exactly like the z24s minus the motor

RS, LS, and LS Sport were all bundled option packages offered by GM. Z24 is an RPO code and does not always guarantee a 2.4 (I have run across two Z24 verts based on VIN with base model bumpers and a 2.2OHV at 2 separate dealers... ), but is a legit sub-model by GM.

LS and LS Sport (03+) are virtually identical option/suspension-wise less the exterior styling and I believe that all LS Sports have sunroofs while LS was an option.

There is also the actual Rally Sport edition, 98 model year I think. Also the 2003 or 2004 Special Edition (all that really makes it special is some racing stripes, but its a legit package)

Additional "models" include Z22, SS, GT (Cav at least) -- all dealer-rice.

I've also seen a del-ray and something like a "Hard Rock" cavalier. No diff other than interior/exterior customized to have logos on the "Hard Rock" and body kit on the Del-ray.

I forgot about that one... there were some that came from the dealer with Razzi body kits

with all the different standards and options it's impossible to list all the differences and be accurate.

ask for a specific year and it'd be easier.

i know for the rs, it was only a 95-99 (for 3rd gens) trim. could be just a base model, could be everything like a z24 minus ground effects, 16" rims and motor.

Well of course it depends on the model year as has been said. When I worked at Lordstown during the last years of the Gen II, there were three basic model groups - Base(VL), RS, and Z24.

VL(Base) - Coupe, Sedan, Wagon
RS - Coupe, Sedan, Wagon, Convert
Z24 - Coupe, Convert

That pretty much held true from 1986-1994. Prior to 86 the sport coupe model was the Type-10 but it only came with the 4cyl. From 1982-1994 Cavalier hewed to a basic trifecta marketing approach using a base model, an uplevel model, and a super sport model (initially Type-10 then Z24). With the Gen III things shifted slightly where there was really only two marketing models a "base" model that constituted most of the sales in coupe, sedan, convert (no wagons after 1994) and of course the Z. There were models like LS etc but mostly just minor trim differences without the marketing differences that took place prior. There was a big psychological marketing change when Cavalier went to Gen III with the loss of the V6. While the Cavalier was a small car having the ability to shoehorn at least modestly potent V6 into the car kept the Chevy 'muscle' car theme going that debut in the 60s by putting big blocks in intermediates, etc. We had an 86 wagon with the V6 as a utility vehicle to run around in and it was fast. I was out of the Cavalier plant when the Gen III models came online but with a standardized marketing platform, migration to option "packages" and the loss of the V6 the car was marketing much more like the Civics, Corollas as a general small car with less emphasis on the unique models and combinations that once could be had. That unfortunately has been the trend for 20 years or so (brought on mostly by the rise of the imports) option choices have generally gone down. Years ago you could order an infinite number of combinations of a car and as you can see on eBay and in the market weird cars do exist. But less so today. An extreme example of this historically was 1930 Cadillac they built about 11,000 Cadillacs that years in catalogued body combinations basically any which way you want. Today there are 8 Cadillac models in your choice of about 5 colors.
