As mentioned the 95-02 2.2 OHV is designated engine code LN2. There are differences though between 95-97 and 98-02...

Can't say for the 2.0 OHV though

yup... 2.2 = LN2

I think the Eco is a L61

I used to have a 2.0 OHC in my Sunbird..... but all I can remember is that the Vin had an H in it somewhere...

It's generally classified as 2200, most searches will yield the 98+ engine if you include it.

2.0.... I knew 2.2 were LN2's but I had a 93' Cav with a 2.0 and from my understanding it was supposed to be rare.. it was a destroked 2.2 that they planned on using as a police interceptor car. Like they said I remember the vin having an "H" in it so... who knows.. If I hadn't sold it a few years back I could have helped out more... sorry.

2.0 OHV engines aren't rare, they're simply the predecessor to the 2.2 OHV; same architecture, same design, and 90%+ of the parts will interchange. There was never a "destroked" performance/police model.

Dunno what the N/A version's code was, but the 2.0T was LT3.

OH... something else....

the 2.2 is a OHV engine, and the 2.0 is a OHC engine....... completely different....

2nd gen Cavy's had the 2,2 and Sunbirds had the 2.0 (or 3.1 V6's in both) there was also a smaller V6 that came in them to in the earlier models but I don't remember the size.... I think it was a 2.6 or something like that.

I'm not sure if 2nd gen 2.2 where actually LN2's or not though.

There is both a 2.0 OHV and a 2.0 OHC. The 2.2 OHV began life as the 1.8L OHV that was in every J-car from '82 through either '83 or '84. It was at this time that the Buick Skyhawk and Pontiac J2000 began using the 1.8L OHC/1.8L OHC Turbo engines. Eventually the displacements in both were increased to 2L, and 2.2L for the OHV variant.

My mom had a 1984 Olds Firenza with the 2.0 OHV engine - carbureted with a 2 stage 2bbl. For 1985 they got TBI fuel injection. I wish that she had bought an '85 at the time - bought the '84 used from Hertz in '85, so it would have been possible. That carb setup was a pain to start from day 1. I hated working on that car - hard to find anything for all the vacuum lines. One of the nicer J-body interiors though, in my opinion.
The older V6 was definitely a 2.8, built here in my home town of St. Catharines. I believe that the 3.1 was phased in when production was moved to Mexico around 1989. I liked the FI 2.8 models - nice blend of power and economy, and sounded nice too.
The 2.0 OHC engines were assembled in Brazil. I only ever saw them in the Sunbirds. I believe this was the case for the 1.8, but I never had the pleasure of working on one. I remember the Olds manual referring to it as an available engine at the time (1984), but I don't think that they were too common, at least here in Canada.

I believe the LN2 designation refers to 1990 and up 2.2L OHV engines. its really the same engine, just with flat-tappet lifters instead of rollers and a TBI instead of an MPFI. previous to that the chevy's and the caddilac cimmaron carried the 2.0L which is a predecessor to the 2.2 and shares a lot of stuff. I think before that it was a 1.8 only for the first year of production 'cuz it didn't make enough power. Matthew, you say you had a 2.0 in your '93? I would be interested in more info if you could remember it, because I've worked on tons of J's and never seen that combination, I really thought that 1989 was the last year for the 2.0 OHV, and the 2.0 OHC never made an appearance in the cavalier.

Hi I'm new here and could'nt resist responding as I have a94 sunbird, 2.0 OHC, vin H, It's a L4.
I also had two 83 skyhawks with the 1.8 OHC, just to let others know they exist. I don't remember the vin or engine code though.
As for the question about the 2.0, 2.2 OHV, I don't know, but it looks like everyone else does.

so just to sum it up so far...

All 90+ 2.2 OHV = LN2
All 2.2 Eco's = L61
2.0 Eco S/C = LSJ
2.4 = LD9
2.0 OHC = ?
2.0 OHV = ?
2.0 Turbo (pre eco) = LT3

so pretty much need the 2.0 OHV/OHC to finish up the list...

if i could get the vin off my buddies 2.0 sunbird could someone get the engine code?

Correct. The 3.1 is a stroked 2.8 (went from 2.99 to 3.31) with the same 3.50 bore.
