Ok this is probably a stupid idea but ill ask anyways....
The raceway is opening up next weekend and i am gonna run the cav for the first time. The cav is also my daily driver... but my question is if i get a smaller belt and make it so it doesnt turn the power steering pulley or the ac pulley will it give me any gains? will it mess anything up ... i was thinkin just a couple days before raceday put the smaller belt on and then after put the regular on?
Also where should i launch my car at a was thinkin like 1.5k i have street tires... also is it true that you can get faster times by lowering your front tire pressure and then running the rear at regular or even higher pressure
thanks guys

I don't know about the belts, but in relation to driving you pretty much got it right. Play with tire pressure and launch rpm's. It takes a lot of time and practice. I have made probably 20 passes with a basically stock car and I found that my best 60' times came from 23 PSI in the front while launching at around 3300 rpm. But everyone's driving style is different and like I said before it just takes practice. Take a look in the racing forum and search for tire pressures, there are a few posts in there about what you should and shouldn't do. Good luck and post up your times when you get them!
thanks bro but did you know cars a full second slower here than other places because of the elevation pretty impressive time... my buddy ran a 16.4 (15.4 there) in an ls cobalt with intake exhaust mounts and short throw so for you to run that is awsome

Dont run the smaller belt. The hp your gonna free up is gonna me minisucal at the very most and its not worth crashing your car by not having power steering. I have driving vehicles with bad power steering pumps(pump would work intermittently) and it was almost impossible to steer.
BTW i unfortunly have read alot of your posts and they all are noob questions that can be answered by a simple search.

really? cus on my DYNO i proved that by removing my serpentine belt i gained 5hp across the board ..and 8hp in some mid range spots..seems like quite a bit of power since its FREE....so my suggestion, if you wanna try it..just take the belt off completely at the track..make some runs.. and put it back on
I used to race my Cavi which was my daily driver at the strip all the time. Don't mess with your tire pressure at all because depending on how much you may race at the strip you will indeed be looking for new tires. In a stock setup your times will depend on the consistency of your take off. I used to brake and gas at the same time. Takes some time to get used to but once you get it the take off is a breeze. The whether will also play a factor as well. The more you drag the more heat is added to the engine. You will usually see people with packs of ice or dry ice to cool the engine down. Anyways the cooler it is outside the faster you times will be. Don't expect anything miracles out of a stock setup though. You are just looking for consistent times and depending on what engine mods you may do later to improve those times.
OH YEAH.....AND I'M TAKIN ALL Y'ALL WITH ME IN A FIRST CLASS CABIN ON THE A$$

So you cut off the end of the sentance to disprove me, congrats. My point is the hp that is freed is not worth the added danger of wreaking your car.
When you get up to speed (which you will be doing on a drag strip) the car gets a bit easier to drive without power steering... besides.... he will be going in a streight line in a fwd car.
Although... whenever you diable to power steering on a car with power steering.... the car will become very hard to steer at lower speeds..... you'll have to use both hands and really crank of the wheel to turn around at the send of the strip.....
Just go out to your driveway, turn your key on but don't start the car.... and try turning the steering wheel..... you'll se what I'm talking about.
You can get better times by lowering your tire pressure in the front and raising it slightly in the rear. I would not go more than 40psi in the rear and lower than 25psi in the front. However there is a point of diminishing return when with the front tires. It may grip better off the line but it will take more effort to roll a tire with less pressure so it will be working against you after the launch for the whole rest of the 1/4 mile.
As for your launch. Do not launch at the point where you are getting wheel hop. I would try and launch closer to 3000 and feather the clutch out instead of just yanking your foot off the clutch.
You can easily drive the car at the drag strip with no power steering. As Weebel said it will not be difficult on the track but when you turn around at the end of the track and in the staging area and parking lot it will be require you to use both hands to turn the wheel.

You can leave out the power steering but you won't see a gain from the a/c delete. I don't recommend removing the belt entirely seeing as that takes the power from your water pump.

The water pump is powered by the timing chain..... not the serp belt. Or at least it should be... I've never worked on an Eco...
I do agree with not completely removing the belt though.... it doesn't take much power to spin an alternator and removing the belt would play hell on the battery.

Pushrods was probably thinking of an LN2 motor not a L61 motor.
I might be being dumb here, but I thought L61 J-bodies did not have a power steering drive off a pulley.
See Pic I see no place for a power steering pulley......

The power steering pumps on Eco's are driven by the intake cam like on 2.4's?..... I didn't know that.
If that's the case... you would have to actually remove the power steering pump and make a block off plate.... that seems like to much work to me unless you left it permanent.
As far as what powers your water pump.... my old 2.0 SOHC in my Sunbird had a timing belt that powered the water pump.... does the LN2 use the serp belt for the water pump kinda like a V-8 does since it's a pushrod motor? (water pump mounted over the timing chain cover)
Yea, the LN2 is serp-driven.
