Possible new DD
Tuesday, November 10, 2009 11:46 PM
So I'm going off to school soon.
I want a comfortable 4 door, gas mileage does not matter a whole lot.
I don't want to DD the cavy, I'd rather just have it for a fun weekend car when I visit home. Which it will been after I finally get the m62 on.
So I've decided on an E39 m5 for a daily

Great cars if you are religious when it comes to maintenance just like every other bmw.

I've been emailing the dealer back and forth, so I'm ready to go look at it/test drive/take some pics Later this week.

2000, BMW E39 M5, 4.9 V8(very ground breaking motor back in the day, has some very cool features like ITB's)
102k miles on it.
6spd getrag
Onto the dealer pics.

lol, first thing i thought to myself: "He wants to dd an M5 so he can have a cavalier as a fun weekend car?"

Fun weekend car meaning that the cav will be the car that I take to the track every weekend and beat the sh!t out of it because I would have a car to drive while it's in the shop when I break it.

I know even the stock M5 will handle better, and be faster then the cavy, even after I install the m62, but I want a quick, comfy, large 4 door for the daily.
And a quick, race minded, small car, for the strip and auto-x, and the cavy suits that.

Make sense?
Hopefully I can explain what I have in mind.

No.

In your situation I'd use the Cavalier to do the everyday stuff, making sure to get no dings on doors the the bimmer.

BMW = fun car.

Cavalier = generic grocery getter, great to go to work.

Very nice buy with the BMW. Just wishing you it will be reliable because when sh!t breaks on these cars it empties your pockets easily.

I've never really been a fan of those style bimmers really, I think I could overlook that on the M5 though, lol. Not a bad DD, you're gonna forget about the cav. What happened to the subie idea?

Where you going to school?

It's all on me.
My parent's got me the cavy, they took care of payments until I got a job.
Now I have almost the cavy paid off, and this is the first car that will be in my name completely, loan title ect.
Time to build some credit.
I make good money, but sorry I'm not going further into my finances on the internet.

Subie Idea was scrapped.
I want leather and an interior that's nice to look at.
I'm sick of dull interiors, and you can see this is far from dull.

And before you think I'm crazy, I will say I've after talking with them, I've got the price down to under 16,000.

I'm willing to bet you'll change your mind when you see the monthly payment on a $16,000 car. I'm 26 have a great job and make pretty decent bank and the payment on my $19k still freaks the @!#$ out of me every month. I could never have swung that when I was in school.

Kudos to you if you can though, seriously.

The interior looks comfortable and nice, but I hate that mustard color. Good find all the way though. Have fun with it....TAKE CARE OF IT!
Re: Possible new DD

id say just sell the cavalier! You're not going to want to drive it after you get the m5!
i love those body style M5s though. The whole car is sick, with the exception of that wood dash and god awful steering wheel!

Lot of debt to take on @ your age, personally wouldn't do it and I'd even change what I did at that age.

Just saying it's clearly more than you need.

Re: Possible new DD

*sigh* too many posts to respond!

First off, that car looks freaking awesome. I've always loved all gen M5's, even though I dislike BMW's.

M5 as a DD so you can dump money into your Cavalier? LOL be serious man, time to turn the Cavalier back (or keep it stock). Nothing is going to match the M5, and you will realize that quickly (take that from a Cavalier/C55 AMG driver). Your M5 will be your nice car, your Cavalier will be your beater, no matter how nice you think you have it. Be very careful with break costs with german cars.....they will clean you out QUICK.

Someone said keep the M5 at home and DD the Cavalier. Actually, I DD my C55 AMG and keep the cavy at home. Not because the cavy is special, but because I just LOVE f'n driving my AMG, even if it's daily to work. My work is safe and secure though (and no one parks next to me), which is VASTLY different than a college campus.

But, you're 18 and want to drive this? Good luck to you, but just cuz you bank now doesn't mean that you're going to be banking when you're in school. Insurance won't be cheap, and neither will your time.

Also, you said this loan is all on you.....except your dad is cosigning....

Being that it looks like you've never been to a college before, you'll quickly learn that you DON'T want a nice car in college. A LOT of stuff happens, and you will no longer have a nice car. ESPECIALLY if it's something nice like an M5. Get ready for more door dings than a golf ball's surface. Trust me on that one. Also, the occasional drunk idiot won't like your car either. That's if you even drive it, because if you live on campus, you won't be driving, you'll be walking. My cavalier was my weekend car when I was at college because I just walked everywhere. Parking was a PITA.

If you want my honest opinion, you don't need to buy yourself a car right now. Seriously. You don't need it, you ALREADY HAVE ANOTHER ONE, and you can't drive both at once, hell, you might not even drive ONE at once.

You really need to save your money for 4 years down the road, invest it a little bit, and get yourself a newer M5 once you're done with school and can focus on making REAL money with your college degree. You don't need a car and this may very well be a very big regret for you.

Take this from my (and many of my personal friends') experience. Drive a beater while you're in college (aka your cavalier, as much as you don't want to hear me say it). Worst comes to worst, WAIT ONE YEAR and see what college is REALLY like. You might be making a very big mistake right now. If a year from now you still want an M5, then get it. But I definitely wouldn't right now at your stage in life.....trust me.

Joe is pretty much right about that.

I agree about buying a true beater and worrying about the BMW bug after college and everything is stable.

As ground breaking as that engine may be, your gonna pay in the end when it comes to maint fees. This isnt a car your gonna be able to fix in your garage...
