Rough idle 99 grand am
Wednesday, June 16, 2010 11:09 AM
Ok so he grand am has a rough jarring idle when sitting at lights. It drives fine and doesn't seem like its missing at all while in motion. But while idling it feels like the engine is jerking every few seconds sometimes and every 30 seconds other times. Would this be a sign that I need to check the plugs and wires? Or any other suggestions. Just trying to keep this thing alive for a few more years. Oh and its a 99 grand am se with the 3400 and it has about 130k on it with nothing ever replaced or done to the engine except for the oil changes every 3k. Thanks

I would def. check the plugs and plug wires. Do a resistance check on the wires see how they are. My 2.8 v6 in my first cav did that. It ended up being a sensor. The IAT sensor can cause that along with the idle speed sensor.

My old Cutlass Supreme with 3.4 did the same thing and it was only the plug wires. I changed the plugs too. The back 3 are a pain in the butt. lol

Yea if it's anything like the impalas just disconnect the front two motor mounts rock the car so the engine moves forward and drop the bolts in behind the support. It'll give you a lot more clearence and it'll make it 10x easier to get to them. Just be careful it's easy to pull the wire off the boot.

I actually refuse to do anything other than oil changes on my mother in laws grand am for that reason. I did plugs and wires and a power steering pump on that thing. No more. What a PITA.
