So has anyone ever tuned a 2200 naturally aspirated?

I've been out of the Cavalier scene for a long time. I currently own and tune GTO's and have been debating on whether or not I should dyno tune my 2200(hold the laughter). Unfortunately it's going to stay on 87 octane because the wife drives it now but it'd be interesting to see what you can pull out of it.

Do you ever have anything constructive to say?

Dyno tuning it may help but alot of the power (or lack of) problems with the 2200 are in the flow of the head.. It definatly wouldnt hurt though...phil

We tuned mine back when all it had was intake/exhaust. The AFRs were really good so we didnt have to touch fueling, but the timing played a big part. We would raise it 2 degrees, drive/scan it, and each time it gained a hair of power... continued until it hit 1 degree of knock, then dropped it back down by 2 degrees.

Dropped me more than half a second in the 1/4 mile (and thats running my best run un-tuned, to my worst run - tuned, just wasn't able to get any more runs in..) Had I gotten a good run, I would have seen a 15.9 atleast on the stock LN2 but 16.3 was all I could pull, with tire spin at launch, and bouncing off the rev limiter for what seemed like a full second, before crossing the line. (was either that or shift to fourth which I was told not to do).

So yes the LN2 is held back quite a bit with the stock tune, the timing advance made a big difference. Didnt need a dyno to tell me that either.

I never built it for N/A & tuned it tho, it was boosted the same time the engine modifications were installed.

thats sick. i didnt think you could squeeze that much out of it. when you added that timing, did you have to use higher octane?

I BELIEVE we did the main timing increase on the 87 octane, then put 93 in to be on the safe side... This was about 2+ years ago but I'm pretty sure thats what we did.

We were able to raise it around 20 degrees before hitting knock.

im glad i saw this thread. very interesting and useful. if could get that much hp out of it on 87 i have to get HP tuners. i just thought the 2200 was a crap engine but it looks like a lot it is because of all the retard in timing they set it for.

ive a few more questions that cam to mind. besides the increase in HP and TQ, would my HP/TQ curves and peaks change at all? Would I burn more gas durring regular driving?

That doesn't really make sense. If your HP/TQ increased, then your curves and peaks DID change/increase... You just answered your own question?

Also, I'm by no means a car guru, but it seems to me that you wouldn't use more gas while driving, you're just making better use of the gas that you currently ARE burning.
