What actually is needed to run the 4t40e?

ok guys lets say one were to run a stand alone ECU on the stock wiring harness but has an automatic tranny (4t40e) and the standalone does not run the tranny...

would one be able to use the stock ECU and leave the tranny harness in tact but cut out all of the engine part of the harness and still have the trans work properly?

basically i need to know what gets the tranny to function, if any of the engine sensors are needed for function?

And I should've been drown in the rivers I've found in token lost...

What year PCM?

It can be done, Brian did it with Crash's car...

crash?! holy hell now theres a name i havent heard around here in a LONNNNNG time!

eh, well... it'd be on my 98. the 'standalone' is that speed pro ecu that ran the m62 on the technic.

*** i also have HPT, so anything that needs adjusted or tweaked or removed i can do.

im also hoping the speed pro runs the stock gauges but i dont know. if not i may leave the sensors for those intact and splice them into the harness for the speed pro so the stock ecu can run them.

is that even doable? or would there be some sort of a voltage drop making them not work right for EITHER ecu?

Yes its doable, once more, takes some "thinking out side the box"

Ill call you some time and explain.

That's what I do for my MS-II swap, and I've had it done for about 2 years now. It's really not hard, but like Chris said, you have to be a little clever and think about what the Jbody PCM needs to see.

Basically you want the Jbody PCM to think it is still running. I leave the stock ICM wired in and unconnected to the coils in order for the Jbody PCM to detect the RPM. Also, leave the stock MAP sensor in as this is how the computer tells the load on the engine and whether to shift at a higher rpm (such as under PE) or to shift at a lower RPM. It might also be required to run the stock coolant sensor (I do) as it determines TCC lockup and I believe shift firmness as well. I also have the stock TPS wiring spliced into the MS-II's, but I'm almost positive the TPS signal isn't neccessary for the Jbody PCM to do transmission control. I may even go out today and test that.

put 12 Ohm (or 3) resisters in line with the injectors... so the PCM still thinks its running...........

I'm not sure if you "need" the resistors to control the transmission. I personally did it because I wanted to keep from throwing trouble codes... that hasn't really worked, though.

this way the pcm thinks its running... with out it the PCM would believe it has a burnt out injector driver...

I think...

I also am pretty sure it needs some kind of TPS sig. other wise it will not know when to down\up shift.
well, it will know, but TPS is a reference, kinda like a old school detente cable.

I have MS-II supplying the 5v and ground to the TPS, and only the jbody signal wire is tapped into the MS-II signal wire. If we would stop getting these crappy ass blizzards and the roads would clear up, I would test this so we could have a definite answer.

hpt transmission charts reference tps, vss, and rpm, input to determine shift properties as well as trans temp, which should already be in the trans harness

"...and then God said let the 2.2's have potential. Thats when hell broke loose..."
