Carbon fiber/fiberglass fenders in progress!!
Wednesday, April 06, 2005 10:45 AM
Well, guys I am in progress of making myself fiber trunk lid.
I am making the mold as we speak and it is going great BTW. I am going to make a 2 piece and fiber it together, and after that fenders, some other crap too.
Maybe even doors.

1st off, everything is goign to be fiberglass, and when I am satisfied with the shape and whatnot then lay CF over it.
The trunk lids could be mass produced, without the reverse taillights, or keyhole.
Stock mounting and everything and sturdy.

Now, moderators, please do erase this because I am just asking about it, but I am wondering who would be interested in some??
I will post the pics of mine, price would be considerably lower than ridiculous prices where you can find it (not too many places)
I don't need people to make a list or nothing just read and say you would be interested and give some ideas of what kinda other parts I could make cause right now I am stock at fenders and trunk lids.

Well good luck to me guys. lol

if your just wrapping c/f over a standard fiberglass piece, why not just go grab some used hoods and fenders from a junkyard and wrap them in c/f? less time, less hassle, less cost, only diffrence is a few pounds, and if anyone is seriously looking to do weight reduction would look at getting actual carbon fiber pieces, not fiberglass/cf?

Well I think that wrapping the stock crap would be just not right
And I WILL MAKE YOU A PURE CF trunk lid, but it is going to cost you about $1500, because there has to be about 7-8 layers of fiber to make it sturdy enough and about 10-15 squared yards of stuff. lol
Ok guys I just made the top mold of the trunk lid, and as it stands I can make some DRAG trunk lids without the bottom support, held down with the pins.
I am going to work on the bottom, structure tomorrow.

This is some staining stuff let me tell you, and the mold is not made of fiberglass.

Have you seen my trunklid with the inset Avalanche third brakelight? I think it looks great and would make an AWESOME production piece.

Send me an email and I will discuss it further with you.

could you make the stock looking fenders out of c/f?

Aren't they already available? Just look for 96+ fenders and swap in your headlight bracket.

good luck. production of glass parts (much less c/f parts) is alot harder and more involved than what it seems you are thinking. but if you can do it and turn a profit, more power to you.

I have already made the mold for the top piece of the trunk lid guys, I am using the 2 part polyurethane foam, and it is not pretty to work with.
I just destroyed my paintwork on my trunk lid today experimenting with things, but who cares right?? Not me. lol I'll just spray it again.
Well, I'll make me one so I am not really going to need the stock lid or the paint that comes on it.
Fenders for 03+ and 96-02 ARE different.
96-99 and 00-02 are different too (just the brackets)

Raven, the reason I would NOT do any kinda crazy things with these, is because some people just like OEM looking stuff, and if they want it later on it will be easier to put that light into the glass then sheet metal.

L61, yes I would.

Tabasco, I don't think it is hard as much as time consuming.
The worst thing is making a mold, we all have to agree to that, but once you make your mold and shoot it with resin, to make it like glass, all of your producs are going to look awesome, and after you are done more resin to smooth imperfections out.

As for Carbon fiber, there is a technic outthere to lay it and if you know it, you know it is not all bad. Just scary cause that stuff is expensive.
Well thanks guys, tomorrow I am going to perfect the mold (just the top piece), and make the lid out of some glass, CF comes later, when everything is perfect.

no, from 95-05 the fenders are the same, with the exception of that small bracket on the 95-99 fenders. same shape, same mounting points...

making a mold is a pain, yes. but i think that finishing is the most time consuming and biggest pain as far as production is concerned. just having a mold doesnt ensure being able to throw glass in and pop a finished product out. tell me...are your molds going to be one piece or two piece? the one piece molds will require 10x more work than a two piece mold will.

and yes, messing with carbon fiber can get very expensive. if the weave shifts during production, the piece can be tossed away as far as carbon is concerned. (unless its going to be painted)

anyway...good luck with it man. post pics if you get a piece done.

It will be 2 piece as you can see I just posted I did the top and I am going to be doing the bottom.
Well crap, I guess we'll see.

not different enough to make a difference. lol. it's a small bracket that's attached to the fender, the fender itself is the same.

If you can do the same w/ a sunfire lid, I am sure you would get a good ammount of people, including myself, who would be in. Also, you could go into full glass interior, not just console and dash. Im talkin roof, doors, interior trunk for systems w/ a prefab design and just make cutouts and boxes for specific speakers. Just my thoughts.

95-99 have the corner bracket. 00-05 cavalier fenders do not have the corner bracket so the 00-05 will fit without cutting the corner bracket.
