Removing the part behind the stock bumper?
Monday, May 09, 2005 9:42 AM
I'm having trouble removing the "support" bumper after you take off the actually bumper. It's like a honeycomb look and stuff, i just dont know how to take that off or a lil bit off because it's hitting my body kit in the front. Any ideas? thanks

Just Drill Out The Rivets With an Air Drill

i dont own an air drill, i haev been tryin to grind the plastic off enough but just not seeming to work right. If i only knew what kind of tool to take those little metel things that are inside the plastic holes that look like a coin then maybe that would work but i have no idea

I'd use a sawzawl. But if you dont have one try a jig saw and cut away at the combs untill it will break free. You could also use a hack saw, wood say, metal snips, anything that is going to cut.

dont take it completely off. trim it down til your bumper fits snug

yeah what he said, lol. too many people cut it all the way off and then have bumper sag issues. i used a jigsaw and it bit right through that rubber with no problem. tried a dremel once and it overheated and stop working trying to get through that rubber. use a jigsaw or sawzawl.

Those silver things holding it on are rivets... I think it was 2000+ cars that were riveted on... my 99 Cavalier has push pins... so much easier to remove

I got out the hacksaw and had my way with it

Yeah i agree dont take it off just trim it. I have a 96 sunfire. I lost mine in an accident and couldnt get it back on. and that thing actualy holds the bumper up in the middle If you realy want to get it off find the indents on the support and cut the plastic around the rivets.

exactly, thats why so many people have saggin bumpers, messed up fenders, etc.

think about it. you KNOW its for support of the bumper. removing it places all the stress from bumps and dips on the few bolts that connect to the fender.

trim it.
