Tension Rods in Trunk
Thursday, November 10, 2005 3:46 PM
Okay, so today I goofed trying to adjust the tension rods in my trunk. When I was adjusting the notches on the passenger side, the rod popped and fell out. I'm out of ideas trying to put this thing back in there, so any suggestions would be a miracle. I would settle for a picture of what the rods look like inside trunk. Thanks for your help. I'm a newb when it comes to message forums, so I'm sorry if anyone finds my cry for help pathetic. Trust me, I'm desperate.

i was working with my trunk and unbolted it from the inside and forgot to undo the tension rods....long story short the hinge activated since the trunk was open and caught my hand in the hinge...OOOOOOUUUUUCCCHHHHH!!!! 4 stiches later I removed the lid and accomplished my goal but they do have some serious torque there.

i use a closed end of a wrench , use a size that allows you to put the rod through the open end at a slight angle , then twist

you can also use a hollow pipe , with a size that will allow a slight angle like a wrench

I didn't realize those rods were so tight in there. Has anyone ecer tried to install some kind of hatch strut or something on a J? I'm kind of curious of how that would turn out. You'd have to do a lot of cutting and fitting. Some trial and error I suppose. It'd be easy to achieve that crooked flip flop trunk, I guess.

Okay, factory they come in that middle slot...say I added a lot of weight to it (like a spoiler), would I put them into the bottom or top notch? Ive seen ones with spoilers in the top notch, but it doesnt make sense to me, since there would seem to be less tension up there...and when I accidentally popped mine out (^^^just like him^^^) it of course went into the upper slot...

I put the rods in the top notch and it popped up a bit better with the wing on. It doesn't make a dramatic difference, but the trunk used to just pop open and set on the hook latch, but now it sits up about 2 inches higher off the latch. Not a huge deal, but it's easier to open b/c I don't have to worm my fingers in to lift up the trunk.

If you use a nut driver .you can stick the end of the rod into the nut driver and reinstall the rod back with out a problem .. hope you get it fixed .. thats how i took mine out i no longer have them in my car ..

Yeah I figured it out. I got the rod back in and adjusted both of them. Now the trunk opens up instead of just going *thunk* and staying comletely still. Thanks and props to everyone for their suggestions.

I know this was a subject from a couple years ago, but this happened to me today (well i locked my keys in the car and the trunk was open and i tried to go into the car through the trunk although it didnt work bc the back seat wouldnt budge from this direction, but some guy tried to "help" me and thought one of the rods was a trunk release and well needless to say i have a rod that is completely off the car and the trunk wont hold itself up) I never paid attention to how these rods were installed, is there anyone that has a picture of their trunk so i can atleast see how they were in there, or know where to find some kind of diagram. I know one of those post here has a picture but it just comes up as a red X.

any help would be wonderful , im so frustrated
