So how do you wire these things to work right?
HAHA! No, seriously that's not my question. I've been on here for almost 4 years, so I think I know pretty well how to wire them.
Obviously, I know I have to tap into the third brake light wiring. What's the gauge of that wiring? I haven't seen the answer to this in any of my searches and I hate mixing gauges. I just want to do this absolutely perfect the first time (if you only knew how I baby this car). I'd appreciate someone's knowledge on this one before I go tearing into the back of the Cavy this weekend!
And while you're at it, I'm going to be doing the DRL disable this weekend too. Am I right that the wire from the BCM is 16 gauge? Thanks in advance for your help!
the BCM is 16, i can confirm that. i dunno about the tails.
Thanks, Adam! That's what I was thinking.
Now I'm just in the hands of the wise & all-knowing JBO gurus for an answer on the tails.
Come on, I know someone wants to show off their knowledge... please.
I wired mine using 16 gauge and the factory wiring was a higher gauge than that. I wanna say it was a 18 gauge.
Isn't that what we are here for.
<sniff>, <sniff> I love you guys. <sniff>
Now I got another question. To anyone who has an 03-05 with the Toyo tails, what did you use for the rubber sealer thing around the outers? All my friends cars (all pre-03) have a black rubber gasket around the outer tails. Do I have to order this from GM or are there other options? I really don't mind ordering it if I have to because I'm trying to make the install look as stock/factory done as possible. Lemme know what you all did. Thanks!
how much do they cost??the rubber gasket that is
Wojo - I dunno yet. The search function wasn't working on gmpartsdirect for me, so I have an email in to them. I'm waiting on part numbers for a new trunk deck and the gaskets. I'll let you know as soon as I get the part numbers and can look up the prices.
you shouldn't tap into your third brake wiring, only because if your tails die you will still have your third brake light. Same goes for the reverse.
Try to use the existing channels for the rear tails like stock

Wojo - I
finally got all the information. GM Parts Direct emailed me the GM Parts Catalog DVD images so I could look up the numbers and stuff myself, so here goes...
The weatherstripping/gasket is part number 22644038. It can be used on either side of the car, so I put my order in for 2 of them. Each one is listed at $2.44 on gmpartsdirect.com. So, when all was said and done, it worked out to $4.88 for parts and $1.17 for S/H. Lemme know if you need anything else.
By the way, if anyone else needs any related rear lighting part numbers for the 00-02 Cavs, lemme know. I still have the GM Parts Catalog DVD images saved in my inbox.
The are $4.06 at the dealer a peice. I got mine yesterday. Trust me. it's not what your thinking is gonna come in the mail. It's a peice of rubber about 1 1/2 foot long that you have to work around the lamp.
That's what I was hoping they were. But then, I'm easy to please.
Now all of a sudden the (XXX Rated) part becomes clear.
