New Fiberglass Hood
Sunday, April 30, 2006 11:05 AM
So I just bought a fiberglass SS Ram Air Hood. When I put it on yesterday, I had the problem of getting it on straight. Then I got that figured out, but now the front of the hood doesn't sit flush against the fender, it's about 1/6" higher than the fender and I have no idea on how to fix it. I tried lowering my latch, but then it didn't even close because the hood would hit. I also put the black adjustable rubber stoppers all the way down so that that I knew they wouldn't hold the hood up too high. Now they are adjusted to hold the hood still. I was thinking that I should put hood pins in to hold the front down better, but i'm not sure. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

it would take some adjusting with the hood hinges loosening and trying to get the front pulled down.. but yes u could easily get some hood pins that would pull it down flush..but try not to stress the hood to much by pulling it down with the pins to much but..so push down on the area and see how it feels.. if it easily goes down then u got no prob with using just the pins.. if u have to really push down on it and kinda put most of ur weight into it then u wanna play with the hinges but using washers to get it aligned better.... mine has teh same prob on just the driverside.. just how it is bolted to the hinges..

take the bolts out of the fender and slide some washers under the fender to raise it a tad

I don't hafta push down too hard, but it does take a little bit to push it down. I talked to a guy that does body work today and he said that hood pins aren't a very good idea. He suggested that i take the rubber stoppers out and see if it fits better that way. Then if that works, take a razor blade to the head on the rubber stoppers and cut about 1/2 off. Doing that would allow more room to adjust the stoppers and have them lower than what the stock minimum would be. Just an idea.

Having hood pins is "added insurance" with a FG hood.

i didnt want hood pins on my car but after it flew up on me i ran to the store and got some... i hate the way they look but i dont have to worry about my hood flying up again. i got lucky and no damage was done at all. i was only going about 35.

im getting new round lock style ones now.

but yeah anyways i had the same problem with the hood being a lil higher than the rt. side fender so i used a 1/8" door hinge shim on the rt. frt. bolt and then it lined up perfect.

Well, we messed around with the hinges and slotted them out a little bit to push them towards the middle and apply a little more pressure to the middle of the hood, thus bringing the sides down. It fits quite a bit better now, but still not completely flush. I also need to cut and sand around the headlights, the very front, and back by the corners near the windshield to get it to flow with the lines of the car. I don't have any pics yet, but I will have some up pretty soon. Thanks everybody for all the info. and I will keep posting in this to keep everyone updated on the progress and load more pictures when I get it painted too.

A guy at my work is hooking me up with a great deal on paint. He said it should be about $150-200 to do the two colors on it and it's 50X better than a Maaco paint job. I'm doing the hood red and the scoop a brilliant white.
