a guy at importfest had that done to his sick rx-7
looked really cool in person!
i almost preferred it over real cf, just because it takes you a minute figure it out and just has that added "wow" factor
when i got my first c/f hood the old guys at the body shop couldnt figure out why i wanted it. some of them said that they could paint the same thing on a car, and then explained what they called "cheese clothing" which was basically this, but using something other than non slip shelf liner.
IMHO it looks about as real as the fake vinyl c/f does. perhaps it could be done and used to look good in its own right.....but you simply cannot fake that beautiful luster that a REAL carbon fiber piece gives off.
my dads been doing that on motocross helmets for a few years now

x2 I've seen it done before, and I just wasn't impressed.

exactly.
there are way too many people doing things half-assed as it is... now this?
oh well, i guess it's just another way of seperating the people who CAN mod cars the right way from those who CAN'T.
When you set out to mod cars you do it by your personal taste there is no set way or RIGHT way to do it. alot of people have stuff i don't like i have alot of stuff other's don't like it is a matter of personal taste. I mean we all set out to build our cars the way we wanted if there was a set way to do it you would go to car show's and all the cars would look the same. I mean everyone here is so worried about what other people think is the right way to do it they miss sight on building the car for themselves and build it by what other people say. to me in my opinion i would say i didn't give 2 @!#$ what anyone says on here and i would tell them the same to their face. I mean I give credit where credit is do i would applauds someone for having this done and i would do the same for someone who had cf vinyl because regardless of if its my taste or not i commend the work that was put into it to make it stand out from the crowd...

if its someone trying to fake a cf hood, thats one thing, but the rx-7 i seen had nothing like that...it was along the body but the way they airbrushed it was like it was 3d behind a layer of paint, like a shadowed look...if that makes sense, lol
but i still say it looked badass and fit his scheme amazing
heres my reasoning. now what joey is talking about i dont have any issues about with like design work on the car, adding it in along with some other designs and such like if someone wanted an american flag on their car i wouldnt expect them to glue a real flag on the car or throwing a little bit in on the rest of the cars paintjob to match the hood or such (although ive seen people use real carbon fiber on roofs and fenders and such so it can be done and done well. but when carbon fiber parts came out it came out to lighten the car for racing that was its main pourpose, well that and its strength. the race cars had it. then it came down to the car modders and their are some companise that do it right but most just do a single layer of carbon and then the rest is laid up with fiberglass, wich is still lighter then a standard hood but still not the same as a pure carbon hood. nowadays its just used to look pretty, there are kids out there that dont even know that carbon fiber was made for a strong light panel. most just think carbon fiber is something that looks pretty. now your talking about faking it even more by just painting your stock hood to look like it. to me its no diffrent then having hubcaps that look like spinners or aftermarket wheels. or putting a type r badge on your car to make people "THINK" its something its not. to me it doesnt so much seem like your doing your own thing but it seems your trying to fool people into thinking youve done something that you havnt. to me there is a right way and a wrong way to build a car. the right way is to save your money up and buy a good quality carbon fiber hood. the cheap way is to paint your hood to look like carbon fiber and most likely tell people its carbon fiber when its not. kinda goes back to i can respect the guy that busts his but at work and buys a turbo kit for his car but i will never respect the guy that goes and buys a turbo sticker and slaps it on his car.

I can understand if it was used in an artistic design. I've seen a custom dash that was done similar and it looked pretty good. I just think it's pathetic when people do it in an attempt to make ppl think they have a real carbon fiber piece. I've even seen ppl at shows mention "that's a nice carbon fiber hood", only to look at it myself and see that it's just a hood with a layer of stick on vinyl over it. Things like that are what make me turn away from looking at cars more closely.
i agre witth how pathetic it is for peopel who get the vinyl or perhaps this and say it's real CF but this paintjob on ti's own is quite impresive, if i had it done i would be bragging about it, i think it looks amazing, though it may not be real cf it makes an amazing paint job.
what really bothers me is that there are a few guys in my town who drive the old 3 door civics and to amke there car look liek it had a cf hood from a distance they jsut painted it black, from a far distance looks like cf get within 20-30 ft and you can tell it's just black, truely pathetic
I was thinking along the lines of like Joe is saying. Never said I liked it on a hood or trunk
.
I understand what you guys are saying about the dishonesty part, but i can also see it from a point of view as each person has a unique taste or opinion rather on what they want on their car... me personally if i has an airbrushed cf hood i wouldn't do just a cf look i would have something else done with it like a picture or something but i would tell people it was airbrushed no since in lying about it... as far as the cf vinyl if someone tells me it's real when they have it i make it simple and call them out on it right there makes no difference to me and if i piss em off then thats their problem for lying about it... i wasn't saying it's right for them to be dishonest about it or anything i was just making the point that it was started there is a right way and a wrong way to mod cars and the way i see it is everyone has their own outlooks on how they want their car to look and how they want to mod it... so their is no set way to mod a car or a right way for that matter
maybe if you had a c/f hood and trunk this would be a nice thing to do on your roof.

if you had any REAL carbon fiber on your car, you definitely would NOT want to do this. it would be very obvious that the painted parts were not carbon and it would look horribly out of place.
NO SIG FOR YOU!
I see what you are saying

well me and my paint guy @ work are gonna try this this week, on a little ecotec engine cover....the plastic one.
He has done it before and can make it look a lot better then the pics ive seen. We will see.
I know its not carbon fiber, but for weird little obscure pieces it wouldn't be to to bad.
for example the dumb little plastic piece between the tails on a sunfire might look good with this. MIGHT.
I have an extra one so depending on the little piece we MIGHT do the trunk panel.
I think it looks cool
And for a part that isn't mass produced in carbon fiber it looks close enough that an normal person wont tell the difference.
e.x. I had over 150 old car guys look @ my car @ the last car show and one of the judges no even notice my big brakes. And they do kinda standout. But the average joe wont know the difference.
i do agree that painting the hood and trunk when they are readily available is dumb.
Id love to see a cam cover done like this.
