Roof vinyl overlay
Tuesday, January 22, 2008 6:43 AM
I have seen some cars with a black vinyl roof overlay. I'm looking for an alternate to painting my roof it has some bad sun damage. Has anyone tried this with the Cavalier? If so are there any pics out there? My car is black.

I am just going to guess that to cover the roof with vinyl and do it properly with good outdoor vinyl would probably cost about the same as painting the roof. Also it would make it look really dumb and like an old lady car.

Go with Carbon Fiber!

I wouldn't mind trying carbon fiber. Any idea where I can get some good quality vinyl online?

covering your roof with fake carbon fiber vinyl will just look tacky

What do you suggest? My car is a bit faded on the roof, hood and truck. The sides of my car are find. I don't want to spend the money for a paint job because it will cost more then the car is worth in the end. I just want a temp. fix for the year 2 years. I was thinking about getting a CF hood and doing some black vinyl on the roof because I see a few cars like that and it didn't look too bad at all.

only way to do it without looking like crap is to get it painted. getting the roof painted wont cost much. maybe 300 bucks to do the roof

If I get that painted it will standout big time compare to the hood and top of the truck thats where I run into a problem. I have some photos I would like to post if anyone can help me with that. I tried uploading them to my profile on here but its not showing.

That'll just buff out.

That sucks!

lol man I wish I could buff this out. I guess from the combination of living on the coast of Mississippi with the blazing heat to living in Tampa Bay killed my paint job from 2000-2006.

go to a junkyard and get a black hood and lid or find an org member near you and get them. then just get the roof painted. thats what i would do. mine is the same way except instead of my hood and trunk its my fenders and 1/4 panels. it doesnt really bother me though

if you want to do vinyl (the sticker stuff, right?) then the cheapest way to do it would be to buy a roll of black and do it yourself. if you want it for a temporary fix, then itll be fine. but be warned that the chances of the vinyl getting messed up (i.e. scratches or gouges) will be probably higher than paint and will look worse too.

if you are really that concerned with it but dont want to spend the money then paint it yourself. since its just a DD, mask everything off, sand it down, prime, paint, clear and call it a day. it wont be show quality, obviously, but it sounds like you just dont want it to have all of those weathered spots all over the place.

good luck with whatever you choose.

Thats from not enough film thickness of the clear coat. Some one has painted it before and wet sanded and buffed too much off.
The sun actually causes the clear to do that if the film thickness isnt within the product limits.

There's no cheap good looking way to fix that. If you use vinyl there is a good chance it wont stay on long since the clear is peeling.
To paint it up nice, not only would you have to paint the roof but the doors also because the tops are peeling.

If it has 0ver 150k miles on it I would just drive it till you can find something else that is worth putting some cash in to.

This is not true Joe I had this Z24 built in early 2000. So I am the first and only owner of this car. I was hoping vinyl would do the job because I'm seeing more and more vehicles with vinyl tops. My car has 112,000 on it right now. I guess I'll just stick with it until I do find something else to put my money toward.

the vinyl could do more damage then it could helping it. imagine how hard its going to be to get off once its been on the car for say 2 years especially being in the florida sun. its gonna be a bitch to remove and i can see it taking alot of the paint with it.

Laying anything over that is just going to make the problem worse. Take it to macco if you don't want to spend alot of money. I would never suggest going to macco for anything but it sounds like you just want it to look better than it does for now.
Macco can do a pretty good job sometimes but I would not hold any faith in having it last.
