I'm considering removing the 'rails', or the panels on the side of my z24, as the paint is starting to fade/chip and they're bringing th entire image of my car down with it lol. My questions are a) has anyone done this and how does it look, and b) is it simply double sided tape holding them on? or will i need to use something besides a heat gun to remove them?
You gotta be really careful, I used fishing line to get mine off. Just slipped it behind the side mouldings and worked it back an forth slowly. If you try to just pull it off, there is a good chance that some paint will come with it. Also, depending on the color of the car and age, it could be faded as hell!! After you're done, get some paint prep-all for removing the adhesive, works like a charm.
Not to thread jack but I just did mine today and had some trouble. Plus I got a new camera so I wanted to try it out.
I am left with this:
I tried this goo gone stuff but it really is nothing more than wd40 and did nothing to remove it, and I'm afraid to try anything else because it might damage the paint. What type of remover should I get. A brand name or photo would be best.
A blow dryer / heat gun and your fingers =)
Have fun! Its worth it in the end.
Wow I just cut my nails yesterday wtf. Seriously there is no way I can get this off with my finger nails. Even if I sat there for like an hour I wouldn't be able to get it off. It isn't the thick stuff that peels off anymore, just the first sticky layer.
What kinda GooGone did you use? Liquid or gel?? I used the liquid googone and it worked fine...
Before and After..
yum
man I just used a heat gun going side to side in slow motion about 6 inches away from the car in lengths of a foot maybe and then rubbed the glue off. It takes forever but you dont want to do this fast. Take your time and don't leave the heat gun/ blow dryer on the paint to long!
ok, so i noticed something today, and it worries me.... I have reason to believe the car USED to be red, and was painted black before i bought it. Is there a significant chance ill pull these off and have a red stripe staring me in the face? lol

if its just the glue than take your thumb and rub it over it til it starts to roll up. i had to do this when i did mine years ago. you'll get a nice blister on your thumb but your car will look clean.
I'll try it today with a blow dryer.
I just did this a couple of days ago. It makes a BIG difference. I removed the side moldings and both bowties, honestly makes the front and back look wider. It is so true about the blister, i did the goo gone with fishing line. I didnt trust the heat and honestly it came off the same. It took a little while and my thumb was killing me but well worth it. My car was a one owner grocery getter so I knew there wouldnt be a hidden color underneath.
Good luck
i used fishing line on mine. i just got it started enough and then grabbed it and pulled it off. it left some residue on the car so i went and bought one of those 3M Stripe-Off rubber wheel thing that you put in a drill. best investment ive made in a while, cant even tell there used to be molding on the car. i can post pics later on if you guys want.
