I have an 00 2.4 liter, havent done any great mods, any really. It still runs strong and I keep it that way. I would like too HO the thing but am debating weather or not I want too work up this one, or build up a 2.2 eco than I know I can get the pony's from. Can the 2.4 computer get reflashed for the 2.2 or should I get that too? Pro's and Cons waiting to be heard. Best is I can do the 2.2 build and keep running the car till the swap is ready.
Eco, imho. I had a 2.4 rod bearing go out on me, my sister had a block crack. I just don't like that platform. Eco's are alot more stable when it comes to everyday use and longevity or even abuse (from what i see). My 2.4 was used, i think it had previously lingering problems i was not warned of. My sisters was also used, so who knows. I just see the same type of reliability problems over and over.
I dont see too much negative with Eco's. That's just my 0.02 tho

In all reality they are comparable engines power wise. The eco has more aftermarket available but the 2.4 can make just as much power. The number 3 rod bearing can go on the 2.4 but half the time the oil level is low when that happens. Mine has 200k on it and still runs fine. Also my dad's cavy has an eco and I just plain like the feel of my 2.4 better stock for stock.
the eco tec has bout 5 more hp then the z does but the eco is a lot newer motor i would stick with the z but thats jst me . im betting when the ecotecs get 10 15 years old they will have problems jst like the zs do.
Actually, the opposite is true. A 2.4 Twin Cam has 10 more horsepower and 5 more ft-lbs of torque than the eco.
