Well guys and gals. I'm done, the cavalier isn't operational anymore. I finally drove it into the ground. It wouldn't start on Tuesday, and I couldn't get it to start, and I tried everything. We had it towed to a garage down the street, and they looked at it today. They said it could be the head gasket and some other misc. things. I told him to write up some estimates for me, and I would call him tomorrow. He told me that is might me more beneficial just to get a new engine. Well, I am not throwing anymore money into this damn car, it has turned in to a big money pit. So, I have decided to get a new car. Luckily, my sister's fiance is a loan officer at a bank, so I can get approved for just about any amount. So, I'm thinking along the lines of a Mitsubish Eclipse, but it has to be the V-6. I'm still gonna lurk around the website, and put in my worthless .02 whenever there is a smart ass comment to be made. If I end up junking the car, if anyone need some parts just lemme know. It is green with black interior, the drivers side door sill has a crack in it, but that is the only damage done to the car.
You can get approved for about anything, but you want an eclipse
I rather keep my cav, then get an eclipse
Anyways, sorry about the J, good luck with your next car!
Convert 00+ headlights to 95-99
the thing is I can get approved for anything, but I have to keep the monthly payments within my budget. I want an Acura RSX Type S, but they are like 20000 used, and 24000 new, and that is out of my budget.
^^^Well just becuase you can get a huge loan amount doesnt mean you want to take it out...i mean you still have to pay it back...
Good luck man. I like the newer GT spyders...but thats just me..
20000 used? Where are you looking bro? used ones go for mid teens....type S 6 speeds...
okay here is the scoop. My car needs a new engine, I have two options. I can have someone put a new engine in, or I can try to pay for a new car. Now, I could pay someone to install a new engine in the car, or I could do it myself (which would have me on here a lot more, asking more and more questions). I could buy a 2.4L Twin Cam Engine and install it in my garage, and save up the whole summer and buy a new car. Or I could pay someone to install an engine, and save up the whole summer and buy a new car. Or, I could get a loan, buy a new car, and then struggly with money for a good portion of the loan. By struggle I mean, pay insurance, car loan, and gas, and that would be about it. I wouldn't have money for anything else. Now I am thinkin either installin an engine myself, and possibly upgrading to a 2.4L Twin Cam. Which I understand is a direct bolt up. Which raises a few questions.
1. Changing the engine, would I also need to replace the computer, and the gauge cluster?
2. Can I do this without a lift?
3. Does anyone have some sort of how-to on doing this, or can someone write a somewhat brief guide on doing this?
4. What would you do, change the engine, change the engine and upgrade to a 2.4, or buy a new car?
5. Is anyone interested in helping me out on this, ideally I need to get this done next week?
I guess that is it for now, I really need any input you have on this. It is a big decision for me to make, and I would like all the help I can get.
Do a search for the engine swap stuff in the performance forum. I'd just swap whatever engine you had in there though.
As far as the money pit, your going to ditch your cavalier for a DSM? Thats hypicritical don't you think?

It wouldn't be a DSM.. he said 3rd gen Eclipse. if it was a DSM it would be sweet, but those cars are getting old, since they stopped making them in '99

Just a word of warning if you decide to go with a 3g Eclipse. I have a buddy that owns an 03 GTS with the V6 and the 5-speed. I like the car, it rides great, and he hasn't really had terrible luck with the car. But if you plan on ever using the Mitsubishi Service Department, don't buy a Mitsubishi. They are terrible, he's brought his car to several different dealerships with the same disappointing results. They are either doing shotty work, doing the work wrong, taking WAY longer than necessary, or just treating the customer poorly. For example, his passenger side seat would not go back to position after it was pulled up to let someone in the back, he brought the car in for service (it was still under warantee). Easy fix right? First it took them 4 days and 2 different orders to get the correct parts for the seat. Then when they put them in they wre installed backwards. Finally they installed the parts and it was fixed, a week and half later. In which time they refused to give him a car to drive while his was in the shop. In my opinion if I bring in a $28k car to be fixed, I want a car to drive, even if it's a base model Lancer, it's just good customer service. O and by the way, the seat is broken again, and he's $2k miles out of his warrantee.

im a @!#$ pussy ass liar! i lied to my girlfriend over and over, sat around with her friends naked and stayed home downloading porn...she loved me and i hurt her...i deserve to be alone and unhappy...no wonder every girl i try to love leaves me...i suck.
Sorry to hear about the J-body...
As far as the Mitsubishi goes... Its not worth the money. If you plan on doing any performance to it... the engine is junk. Just think Dodge Caravan. I have one right now I am working on and the guy wanted more performance out of it. There isn't a whole lot you can do to it besides exhaust and an intake.
And on a side note the car is very specific. The engine will misfire unless it has the factory NGK double platinum plugs in it.. which will run ya about 80 bucks. The Factory clutch OEM replacement runs about 500 bucks... aftermarket... 800+. The timing belt goes like clockwork at 60k. The engine is an interference engine, and just jumping one tooth on the timing belt will bend all 24 valves in the head. They suck hardcore.
But... to each their own ya know.

LOL, you are complaining about engine problems and you want a V6 eclipse. Why don't you buy a ecotec off ebay for 500 dollars and drop it in there?
whats wrong w/ gettin' a 3rd gen eclipse. my buddy had a gsx and that thing was insane. he rebuilt the motor w/ the 16g and lighten the crank. the only thing thats bad about eclipse's is that the 2nd gens are known for crank walk
actually, the only thing wrong with Eclipses are they are Mitsubishi's
i find it funny their ad slogan is "the best backed cars in america". but hey only offer a 5 year/50,000 mile warranty.
so if they are IN FACT the best backed cars in america....what does that make Hyundai, Kia, and Suzuki that offer 10 year/ 100,000 mile warranties? i'd say it makes Mitsubishi the worst built and backed cars in america with a false ad slogan to reassure customers that they're building their cars better like they did the last 2 times they publicly admitted they knowingly built cars to be unreliable.
Mitsubishi is a horrid choice, everyone should steer clear of mitsubishi. either go with an RSX used or a Scion tC. and donate the j-body so you can claim it on your taxes next year.

Is your current car paid off? Cuz that would make a huge factor in the decision if I were making it.
If you still owe on the current one, hell with it, find a dealer that's having one of those "Push, Pull, or Drag" sales where they give you like $3,000.00 for ANY trade in, regarless of its condition.
If the car is paid for, well, that makes it a little tougher. It would depend on how many miles is on it, and what overall shape the car is in at this time.
You have to look ahead and decide what is gonna be cheaper for you in the long run.
Not sure about your area, but around here you can get a new 04 Cav that is left over from last year for around $8500-$8900 dollars. Still a brand new car, just not an 05 model.
