Just wondering if anyone knows if the 2.2 litre OHV 4-cylinder in many 1989-2002 J-Bodies (and others) is based on the 4.4 litre (267 cubic-inch) Chevrolet V-8 of 1979-1982, just cut in half.
If you look at the specs, they are almost identical
267 = 3.50" (88.9mm) bore * 3.48" (88.4mm) stroke, OHV, 2 valves/cylinder, 8.3 CR, 120hp @ 3600
2.2 I-4 = 89mm bore * 88mm stroke, OHV, 2 valves/cylinder, 9.0 CR, 115hp @ 5,000
Of course the induction and power levels are different, but the basic architecture seems the exact same.
It seems too much of a coincidence that they have the exact same dimensions, and I have heard that a lot GM 4's are just cut-down V-8's....anyone know for sure if this is the case?
nice theory
but there isnt much that is interchangeble between them
You also can't "cut an engine in half", they are completely different. The crank on the V8 has positions for 8 cylinders, not 4, cam timing is all different, .1mm difference in bore is quite a bit, .4mm difference in stroke is quite a bit, .7 CR difference is quite a bit, etc...

.4 mm and .1 mm differences doesnt seem like alot, but with the close tolerances engines require its all that counts.

The 2.2 has its roots in the 2.0OHV, which is just a stroked 1.8. Pretty much the entire valvetrain (expect for the valves themselves) are interchangeable with small block parts, and the FPR is the same as an LT1, but thats where the similarity ends.
what parts on the valvetrain are interchangeable with a small-block?

Then following you theory some Subaru, Toyota, Honda, Ford and Mitsu engines are all from the Quad 4 that came from the 4.5L Caddy engine.
If you take a replacement piston book and look at the spec you'll see that alot of engines have the same spec but doesn't make them brothers.
You want a brother engine, 2.3 and 2.4. Ld2 Vs Ld9. Those have different spec but are brothers.

The 2.5 Iron Duke is basically a 301 Pontiac cut in half, many parts are interchangeable. Also the 4.3 V-6 is a SBC with the front two cylinders cut off. Same with a 318 Dodge and the 3.9 V-6. And the GM 4.2/3.5/2.8 inline engines.
