ahh the pleasures of owning a j-body...
Thursday, March 01, 2007 9:00 PM
hey, ya know, I dont know if its just human nature to wanna bash people and try to make yourself look good, but lately, its really starting to get on my nerves. Point being, I love my cavalier, i dont say theyre the most awsome car in the world, and i dont go saying crap about other peoples cars. But im in the process of building the engine for my car, my hard earned money is going into a car that certain people have been telling me is a waste of my time. One of them being the owner of a rusted old 87 camaro with an engine he claims is running 500 hp when in reality is barely pushin 300. I know everyone has theyre own opinions, but its people like that who think the only way to make power is with a V8, that keep pushing me to prove them wrong. Im not going around saying I want to make 300 hp, or askin how to do it, i know how to do it, and want to one day. All i want right now is a mid 14 second car to show that a cavalier isnt just a grocery getter as some people say. Possibly dip into the 13's if i decide to run nitrous. My major point of this little rant being...i dont care what make, model or year of car you drive, if you want to stick your money into it and try to make it fast, you should be able to regardless if it has the all holy camaro or corvette badge attached to it, and it shouldnt be bashed on just because its just a little "4 banger". Thats just my opinion.

who cares what other people think man... Do what you feel is right...... For every person that bashes your car, there are 10 people that wont talk to you, but like the car.. so who gives a %^$

it IS just a grocery getter, its a very cheap, very low end, economy car with nothing performance related in mind.... even the sporty models (Z24, LS Sport) come with twist beam rear suspension, drum brakes in the back, tiny brakes up front, struts that are stressed by the stock springs that make it sit with the ground clearance of a 4X4. If it wasn't a grocery getter the they wouldn't have to limit the top speed to 108 because the tires, brakes, suspension, can't handle going any faster.

You ever heard that saying "You can polish a turd but its still a turd" that aplies in this situation. And its funny i read this I'm thinking this guys gotta be in high school so I checked your profile.... what a shocker.... born in 1989.

this guy does.... which is why the high school age guess comes to mind

the better question is why do you care what other people think, or why does it matter what other people think.

IRS swap, rear discs, bigger front brakes... all can be swapped with little effort

Add to that a decent set of struts and lowering springs... problem solved.

what exactly does age even have to do with anything, if u want to bash me, do it. And yeah, it is a grocery getter, i do think i said prove its not "just" a grocery getter. It is, does that mean i shouldnt be able to modify it and make it something that makes me a little proud of. And if your thinking im just a punk high schooler who doesnt know a thing about cars, i'll let you think whatever you want, im not gunna get all offensive about it. Most high schoolers probly dont know they're way around a wrench at all, but ive been around mechanics my whole life so dont just bash a person becuase theyre in high school.

and actually the major bashing that happens isnt even from a high schooler or anyone young for that matter. Its from people behind the counter in their 30s asking you why your wasting your money on performance stuff for a cavalier. That gets a little annoying.

I could tell you in high school from your attitude.... you like your car noone else does, so now you want to mod it up and show them what it can do, that'll show em! Give me a break.

lets go over this again.... you like your car..... again you like your car. One more time you like your car...... so why does anything else matter?

You can dumb as much money into the car as you want and as long as its recognizable as a cavalier it will be looked down on by others, thats just the way it is and thats not gonna change.

ok, thats fine. I'll still "dumb" away my cash into my car because i like the looks of cavaliers. But i do understand your point, and the last thing you said is exactly what makes me mad, just because its a cavalier. I just dont like the basic "hes a high schooler so hes just retarded" type of mentality. But i understand your point, and thanks for the input.

dumb = dump, sorry watching a movie so only half paying attention but the point remains the same.

one day at the drag strip after taking down a C5 corvette the guys comment was its still just a cavalier, maybe he was just pissed he got spanked by a @!#$ box grocery getter but it still didn't earn me/ my car any respect in his eyes, but then again hes right.... it is still just a cavalier. Alot of people are gonna be like that. I've run into plenty of @!#$s and plenty of good people, I've had a guy with a blown big block 71 challenger come up to me and tell me he voted for my car for the participants choice award at a car show because he thought it was preaty cool to see somethign new and different and blah blah. It goes both ways but the general perception of the car will never change because it is exactly what its designed to be.... a cheap grocery getter.

yep, and ill just learn to respect that. All im going for is the road less traveled i guess, some people say to just sell and buy a car that already has the power. But theres no sense of accomplishment there. I just want to have something different. I hate following the crowd, and i hate close minded people, but ill just have to deal with em. So thanks for snappin me outta my stupid little slump.

Haha you think you got it bad?? Imagine the reaction i get when somebody finds out that ive dumped 10,000 + into my SUNFIRE... I actually get the comment "dude a cavalier is a better car than that"

BUt hey its ok, because once they make a comment like that i realise something.

The person talking @!#$ is a moron. Thats why he's talking @!#$, because he is uneducated in something that he WISHES he knew a little about. And its that simple, would you let a monkey piss you off because he would smell his own @!#$ but not yours?

dark pretty much has it right on this one. it will always be a cavalier. so if your doing it to try and "change peoples minds" you might as well just give up now. dont build it to change peoples minds. build it to have fun and enjoy yourself. if you think about it, if your doing it just to change peoples minds your basically spending all your money to make someone else approve of it, that to me sounds like your throwing your money away. build it for the enjoyment you get out of it because its the only thing worth spending your money on.

IMO... darkstars has it right on the money. it IS just a cavalier... most ppl wont even care if it runs 12's and looks good doing it. even the tuner car scene really could care less about anything domestic.

i mod my CAVALIERS because i love them and its nice to see something different than the 10,000 hondas running around. and it DOES go both ways, ive had ppl come up to me at shows and tell me my car was awesome and that they loved it, yet others come up and bash it and tell me its a waste of time. ive had old guys at the drags come up to me and actually ask me advise on how to make their cars run better and such because they saw me running my car constantly and wonder how that little car can keep going. i really enjoyed that. and its awesome to have ppl respect you for that.

i do my cars for me... and nobody else. sure its still nice to hear a compliment here n there, but its also nice to hear ppl bash my cars... it just makes me want to try harder.

around my area i get alot of respect and comments (good) when i go to the track. This comes from corvette guys, srt4 guys's coablt guys ect. I guess its easier to get respect when you actually have something to back up these econo cars rather than just say "yeah i'm gonna rebuild the motor and this and that". Good luck and if you've got the cash deffinatly rebuild it or build up what you got and when it gives, rebuild it. My best advice.

I used to get laughed at all the time for having a 90 cav with deals and a huge aluminum spoiler, hubs and dark tint. ghetto air intake, then i FOUND THE.ORG and i totally found out what i was doing was just plain "mexicanization" lol
, but then i took a 360 bought good parts and did it to enjoy myself and learn new things i ddint understand before.

hell remeber Boomer cav.. red four door.. he had a fish tank in his car.. just plain funny to most of the members,
but then he turned it around and became one of the most recognized members.

Do it for your self ad people will be more impressed then.. and even now a days with my 04 cav..
i still have idiots past ignorant comments i ignore them it make them feel worst cause they realize that i didnt have the time to reply to thier nonsense.

i even was the first in my area to get lambos on my cavalier.. I did it cause i wanted too, not cause i want people to say "wow your the coolest in my book bro" i did it for "ME".

and hey if some one liked it and said they liked my car.. cool. if not i wouldnt care either way.

So all in all your moving in the right drectio if you decided to fix it up for "yourself"!
(1) you found the .org
(2) mod it for yourself and no one else
(3) beauty is in the eyes of the beholder..however if its just naslty modded you will recieve alot of negative comments trust me lol.
Good luck

I don't usually chime in to these kinds of threads because everybody has their own view and there own way on dealing with this. No matter what car you have it's either going to be a ford, or a chevy, or an import or a 4 banger etc. etc.. Honestly I must say I haven't had any flack in a long time becuase I think slowly cavs have actually gained some respect (my opinion again). However when I bought my car I was looking at T/A's, camaro's, even mustangs. But I wanted something different that would give me a challenge.

My point is you shouldn't be sweating other people, proving yourself or taking any of them personally. You should be thinking about your next mod car show or the next thing you feel like doing in 15 mins v.s. thinking about other people's comments.
