Hi, just yesterday my car was towed after blowing a head gasket the day before, I had left the car around 3pm or so to figure out what I am going to do, with plans to get the car towed to my house using AAA, etc. Note the car was in a breakdown lane, no where to interfere with traffic. I was going to get the car towed the day I found out my car was already towed by order of the Epping Police in New Hampshire. I was not informed... or did the police nor towing company which was a town further away?? (which I found odd, after finding out a company in epping was towing for the cops also that day) had my permission to tow my car away, didn't even give me a NOTICE that my car was being towed, I didn't know what to do when my head gasket blew, I thought I could just leave it there for a day and get it towed the next. I had to personally find out where the hell my car went, searching up and down for miles at towing companies, then found a police officer at a gas station and asked about it and pointed me to a company in the town over which was Raymond. I have to pay a fee of 140 bucks to get my car out... because I couldn't get the car out that day since they closed by the time I could get transportation since I had none since my car blew. Are they pretty much robbing me??? those bastards did not have the right and permission from me to tow my car that I personally own. Can someone help me here? is this okay for them to do? or can I do something about this. PLEASE help me.
they don't need your permission to remove a car from the side of the road. sounds kinda fishy that they didn't contact you, but i don't know right off hand if they are supposed to.
you think $140 is robbing you... wait til you get the bill on that head gasket.
Yeaaahhh... gonna suck. But I mean, does anyone know standard procedure a police officer needs to do when finding a car on the side of the road? I thought they had to post a notice on the vehicle, or ATLEAST contact the owner? I'm sure they could easily just look up my license plate and easily find out who it belongs to. Is there a way I can get out of this though? This weird towing company trying to make me pay money to get my car taken out? I didn't want it towed, i didn't say for it to be towed, I don't want it stored in your facility, so why should I pay money to have my car out? Lol it doesn't even run right now ha ha.
Did you leave anything to let them know it wasnt abandoned?
Here you supposed to put a t shirt or something hanging out of the driver side window(whatever side faces the road but its usually driver side) to let them know your broken down and not just leaving it there..
They dont have to contact you in NY, however, some police are nice enough to do so.
And yeah thats life, get used to it. Your not getting out of it. When a towing company is ordered to tow a car, they charge you for everything. It doesn't matter what you say. The police ordered them to do so, there not gunna take the loss.
most will place a notice on the window ,and if not moved in 24 hours its towed
AT YOUR EXPENSE , for the tow fees and impound fees which go up daily
you should drove the car off the freeway , or called AAA right then and there , chalk it up as a learning experience , pay the fees and save up to fix it
Why not drive it home, or to a shop? I drove for 2 weeks with a blown headgasket...
While it is odd that they actually towed it that day (around here you can see a car on the side of the road for a week before its towed), they have no need to call you to let you know its being towed...how the hell would they know which number to call?
wow that sucks. my boyfriend ran into a problem somewhat like that ..
he recently purchased a 79 TA from some guy in Ohio that he found on his F-Body site and was on his way home from picking it up (we live in chicago). well on his way through ohio he completely spun a rod among other things that went wrong with the engine. a cop that was following him for the past few miles stopped by him not to see if he was alright, but to tell him that he couldnt keep the car there very long. he ended up having to sit there and wait over an hour for the tow truck to get there for the car otherwise he would have been ticketed. you'd think theyd give you some kind of pity if you're stuck on the side of the road in a state that you don't even live in. ... guess not.
the TA is still in ohio getting worked on because it can't run. the mechanic that's working on it took apart some of the engine and noticed the a$$hole who sold my boyfriend the car was holding things together with epoxy. looks like the car will be there for a while.
I'd check your local laws on this. I'm pretty sure in PA when a car is abandoned on a highway they post notice that the car has to be removed within such and such period of time... I don't remember if it's 24 or 48 hours... they leave a bright orange type sticker on the car with the notice...
Some police departments will even try to contact the owner before doing so. When I was working at the local 911 center, there'd be quite a few times a police department will radio in a tag to verify the info they have on it,... and ask us to look up a phone number for the owner. it'd be nice if they just carried phone book in their cars... but they apparently don't lol
Check your local laws
my car was towed off the masspike literally 3 hours after my dad had picked me up
we didnt know til we went to get it the next day
my dad paid for the tow bill, but AAA i believe re-imbursed him for it
AAA is usually pretty good about that, call them and ask about it
Yes. Contact AAA and they will reimburse you for a portion of the tow or all of it depending on what type of membership you have. In my experience in NJ, abandoned vehicles could be picked up anywhere from two hours to three days. Even with a flag or a tag, depending on traffic conditions, it's really up to the cops when and where to tow you at your expense of course.
Vehicle code gives law enforcement authority to tow cars for whatever reason. They don't have to give warning or call the
owner. 72hrs is the normal time given to remove a vehicle after it is marked. Also depends on traffic hazard and the area
where you broke down.
But whenever my pos breaks down on me I always leave a note saying it broke down and a tow truck is coming.
When I was in the trucking business we had a truck break down on the LIE (Long Island Expressway). It cost over $300 to tow the truck 50 feet to the exit ramp, down the ramp, and in to the gas station across the street. Wasn't even a mile, heck it wasn't even a half mile! Talk about a racket and a rip-off. Welcome to the NYC Metro area.....now empty your pockets....
Make sure the tow truck parks somewhere where there are nails under its tires.

yeah believe it varies from state to state and athuroity to authority basically the rule is a cop has to see it and tag it and then the tow companies can tow it. i dont think anyone has to notify you at all but there are allot of shady towers around that may just saw it and took it hoping you' d just pay the money. you yourself have no rights if its on the highway wether its out of the way or not. BUT if the police did not authorize the towing then you may have something. you need to contact the police and find out what their written policy is then tell them about your car and see if the tow company took your car legally or illegally.

yes im sorry to say that they can do that at least here in hersey i kno they can i dont kno if laws up there are any diffrent.. but if its on a state road... even back roads count as as state roads they can tow it at your expense... and especially if its on a highways, ur best bet would have been not to leave the car untill you got it towed urself...
Unfair? Yup... totally sucks. The final cost will suck too!
Around here you get an orange sticker on your windshield and have to move the beater within 24 hours.
Rob
Sold 2/2/05
in cali think you only have 3 hrs to move it once it is tagged....
When the police run your plate, it will not come up with a phone number. Granted it does have the address you registered the car with, but that is not always accurate. They are not responsible for looking up your current address or telephone number and notifying you. Here in Kansas you have 48 hours if tagged by a State Trooper, after that you are S.O.L. I would see what the law in your local area says about abandoned vehicles.
