Time to throw in the towel....?
Monday, July 16, 2007 4:23 PM
Well here is what is going on right now. Today I went on break from work and went to jimmy jonhs for lunch and the car was running fine untill I stopped at a light. It sounded like one of the coils was goin out again, but it went away. I went into JJ and finished up and when I went to start the car it fires up running rough as all hell on 2 cyl's. So I get out go check all the the the conections under hood and its all fine.

Now I have had this problem before. Once it was a tach adaptor that went south, the next was a bad factory coil. Now this time might be a coil or the ICM, I'm getting tired of fixin the same @!#$ on this cav, but I'm so close to havin all my egine parts to send the motor out to get built. ( all I need is pistons ) While I sat in the parking lot I thought about all the @!#$ I could part out. Then put the car to stock and sell it off and buy something else. I guess I'm just pissed off but it really bothers me because the motor is stock.....I haven't even sprayed the dam thing in the past year. Granted the car is 7years old but I do all the maintence on it consistantly. Idk I'm just pissed off.

Who knows once I wind down I'm sure I will be fine. The other day I was working on my 86 caprice and thought about getting it ready to get licsenced for the road again with my next 2 checks from work, and then putting the cav in the garage and workin on it over a period of time........

What do you guys think? part the beer and sell it off and buy another car or keep the peice of @!#$ and rock the box coupe while I overhaul the entire car?

END RANT.....thanks for ur time

I'm one for sticking it through, but it depends on how much YOU want to do that.

Getting "better built" for the '08...

^ true and that is how I've been ( working through it ) I've had to replace engine, trans ( under warentee ), beam axle and misc other parts. I have also saved and purchased all these parts I would hate to part it out. I know that If I did sell everything I would be in the same boat with the next car since I can leave anyhing on any of my cars alone. I have to play with something to keep me busy.

I ended up getting the car home and I swaped out the coils one by one with the spares I had that were working. When I pulled the origional motor when I made expensive noises on the bottle 2 yrs ago. Then I started it up and it was doin the same thing. So I then pulled the plugs out and the #1 and # 4 were not firing so i though It was bad and purchased an oem replacement at auto zone for $25 and the problem was still there.

Then to check the new coil to see if it was bad I switched it with the 2,3 coil and I had the same problem. Cylinder # 1/4 would n't fire but #2,3 would so I returned the coil I purchased and got an ICM and put that son-bilch on thinking problem solved.......wrong again Cylinder #1/4 still were not firing! So now I'm out of Ideas and am lookin for some input on the ignition system.

I'm goin to wash up and grab a beer while i search the maintence forum to see if I can find anything.
If anybody as a sugestion I might have overlooked feel free to post up.

Mine had the same problem. exactly. I changed the injector seals and also adjusted the idle screw which had backed all the was out.. Im not sure which fixed it but mine no longer has the 1/4 miss. oh yeah, I had also replaced both coil packs and this icm and the miss persisted. try adjusting the idle screw if your has one.

^ thanks for the advice josh but my 1/4 miss is still presant in any rpm. I will look into the injector seals though

new plugs and wires... FIRST

if nothing, then maybe the little module that the coils sit on, that little plate? i dont know what its called, the control module or something. I heard its expensive, but im sure it can cause the problem youre having... theres not much more to the IGN system, that module, coilpacks, plugs, wires, and the position sensor... Im sure if the sensor was bad youd be getting a CEL, but who knows sometimes....

Id say stick with it,

BUT if youre throwing in the towel, im interested in the intake, TB, flywheel and a whole MESS of other goodies you have on it...

not to change the subject, but how is the driveability of the stage 3 clutch with the light flywheel? -- im going to be upgrading soon, and im looking at a stage 2 most likely, but im curious nonetheless...

good luck sorting this one out. BTW, if you wanna try out the module, i can strip it off my sunfire, for cheaper than a parts store will

ICM, it's gotta be. I know most parts stores can check these for free on their little machine if you bring it in. I have also bought brand new ICMs that were bad from the factory, so have the new one checked before you buy it. Also, check the ICM wiring to make sure nothing is lose inside the connectors.
If you decide to part it out to stock, I'll buy most of it

Well boys heres the scoop. I have swapped wires and plugs from the 2/3 coil and swapped coils and icm off my buddies sunturd. His parts work fine on his car, but on mine they do not. Then I checked the wiring and swaped out the plugs with some TR-6's I have and they still wont fire on the 1/4 coil.

I beleive that It may be an issue with the computer or some other wiring that I still need to check in the harness.
But Since this has happened I have been working on my 1986 caprice coupe alot in the past week. I look at it like the fire that got lit under my ass to get work done on the caprice. I installed a new brake booster, master cylinger, rebled the entire system. Installed a new starter finished my battery relocation to the trunk, and installed the front half of the interior. All that is left now is new weather stripping on the doors, and drop the car off to get a new exhaust installed from the headers back. Then I'm getting the title put in my name
( its in my dads since I purchased it when i was 16) and switch the insureance and I'm golden.

So......I decided to NOT part out the can-o-beer ( SORRY KEN ) and begin my overhaul on the body and a few other things as I will be albe to take my time and do everything the way I want. Oh and if anybody cares I will be ordering a new posi and 4.11 gears for the caprice and installing my 6AL box shortly as well so keep an eye out in the photos and media forum.

i have had something similar to this before, but you might want to check your mass air flow sensor. it sounds like a stupid idea but when my car was run horribly and was not staying running i though plugs wire, electrical then i looked an low and behold the senor had oil on it and it was trying compensate for the bad air reading by dogging two cylinders. Just a thought
